First decent snowstorm spent all night pulling cars.
First time I got to test out the new gears, rear trutrac and front arb locker. Although I didn’t get to use the locker. Spent all night pushing cars up small hills in the country as they were stranded and screwed because the state police never ever come by and even if they would go directly to my area it’s a thirty minute drive in good weather. It never amazes me how people think it’s a great idea to drive their little kias in over a foot plus of snow. Probably around 16” didn’t have to use the winch and I probably wouldn’t have as I don’t trust what the people would do when I’m winching them out. Most just needed a push to get up over the hill. I forewarned them that the back of their car is going to be messed up, but they said their alternative was to be stuck in the middle of the road in the country for who knows how long. As I needed a coffee and was heading to the wawa I helped dog out one car and get them going and I was shocked how strangers would stop to help and pull me up behind the cars so I don’t just smash into them. Some out there jackets on my bumper so a strangers car wouldn’t get scratched all while the local town cops would either cruise right by or stop and say you good and leave. They would t even throw there lights on. Wind gusts were over 50mph so visibility was not that great. I came across two cars one which was stuck ran out of gas, and killed their battery from leaving the lights on as to not get hit. I keep a five gallon gas can with me. Anyways this is my second year on these 35” procomp all terrain tires on a 15” wheel and they never cease to amaze me at how well they perform in the snow. I normally don’t plug companies, but these tires are amazing. Not the best with only an inch or two, but the deeper the snow gets the better they perform. Surprisingly in my 08 auto with 5.13 gears I ended up averaging 14.7 mpg which is a heck of a lot better than what I was getting running 3.73’s. Burned a tank of gas, helped a lot of people. Drove some of my friends who are nurses to the hospital for work. Not one cop who drove by gave me a hard time if I had my kc windshield lights on, which surprised me because they give me tickets for my trail doors and tires sticking out. Stopped home a few times to snowblow and plow the driveway. It’s still snowing here roads are covered so I’m sure I will get to play Uber driver for friends this morning.
That is fantastic. I am always helping people too on water or land. It makes you feel good!
it does, but it’s frustrating too. Apparently everyone who drives a Kia Soul thinks it can go through more than a few inches of snow up a hill. Jammed up everyone else that was behind them. Some times I had no choice, but to help in order to keep moving. What pissed me off was the guy who was soo lost in his soul, and when I went up to his window because he was all over the intersection for ten minutes trying to go every direction, he puts his window down and it just stinks of weed. Here in Pennsylvania we don’t get many big storms maybe one or two a year. Most businesses will announce they are closed the day before. Everyone knew this storm had the potential for 24” of snow with wind gusts of 50mph plus. The road crews don’t really get moving until there is a decent amount of snow. I saw more front wheel drive vehicles trying to go wherever than I did suvs. Add to it that the few police I did encounter in the city, I went past close to twenty not one would stop to help someone who was stuck. I had my kc wondshield lights angled way down because my truck-lite leds tend to freeze up and that way I’m not blinding anyone. So at least the cops didn’t give me a hard time running around like that all night long. I was happy that I installed heated seats four years ago because they definitely helped. Cheap $70 Amazon ones that have been rained on soo many times and yet they keep working.
So true, there are always the ones that just don't get it. Some honestly just screw up, that is how we learn as well, others like smoking weed and drinking in anything like what you had are just stupid. I recall pulling a family back to the dock on a lake. I mean with 2 year olds etc. The guy said he had trouble with the engine but just wanted to go out. Really!? it was getting dark when I was going by him. Imagine sitting on a boat with young kids in the dark all night!
What blew me away was a few things. First being that it was snowing heavy and steady for a few hours and at this point probably had close to six inches of snow. Why on earth would you take out these little front wheel drive cars and think it’s a great idea? Second they both were a good ten miles out of the city in the boonies. Both of those people were using gps and still lost how on earth is that possible. I asked both of them how did you manage to get this far out into the middle of nowhere while using your gps? Both said they were not sure. In my area especially on the hills which never get plowed salted or conserved until the storm ends, become scattered parking lots where people abandon their vehicles and come back another day for them. Most of the time with dead batteries and very little gas left if any. Too many vehicles at one time for the cops or tow trucks to make their way out to help. It’s kind of a fend for yourself situation. I keep the large packs of hand warmers in the jeep for those circumstances to help with what I can and normally carry a five gallon can of gas. When I go out I’m prepared and constantly adding more gear and supplies to help others or myself in case I get stuck. I have friends who go around and help as well as these vehicles that will become abandoned cause a lot of problems for plow trucks and emergency response vehicles. I go alone sometimes, but am in constant communication with friends who are normally only a few miles away. The police normally don’t ever bother with us and a lot of times will either drive right by or stop ask if we are good and keep moving.
