Gas Mileage?

True. Very true. The mileage is atrocious, and could be made far better. It sure would be nice if they would do something about it. I have a very short commute, I am supremely lucky in that. If I didn’t, I can say with 100% certainty, this new Jeep would not be in my driveway. Period. As much as I love it, I simply could not have afforded it had I not moved. I used to live nearly 70 miles from work (one way), I was spending in excess of $500 per month in fuel costs, and Proximity to work and higher gas prices was the final catalyst in me moving. Selling my old gas hog F150 right after that move was the next item on the block.

I wish DC would help our beloved Jeeps get better gas mileage. The JK has the same engine as our minivan and the van gets about 25mpg. When our gas prices got upto $3.09/gallon the wifey and I were looking at Subaru Forresters, they get around 28 mpg, simply because we live in an area where you have to have AWD or 4wd and we travel great distances to visit friends and family and a Jeep, my TJ and her XJ, getting 15 mpg down hill and probally 12 back up really sucks. But we came to one realization....we are Jeep people and we will always have a Jeep regardless of mpg...now if Jeep could just make a Minivan or if they could make that third row in the Commander a little more useful we would be happy, but the JK may fit the bill just like our lifestyle.

I know this pic probably looks like crap, but I just finished a 1200 Mile drive this weeknd and got 24.1MPG overall on my journey...(Keep in mind I have 3.21's and pretty much set the cruise at 75-80 the whole time) I have 5300 Miles now, i miss when it read "12" miles on the dashboard

So far (first 2 weeks of ownership, ~1k miles) I've averaged 19 mpg. The commute to work is 30 miles each way, not interstate nor stop-and-go (rural downeast Maine). That's with the auto transmission, which may not compare with fuel economy of 6-speeds.
Which is what I was hoping for. It's replacing my 1999 XJ Cherokee, which averaged 20-21 mpg.

I just hit my second fill-up last night, and am getting about 14.25 mpg, calculated by miles driven / gallons consumed. The first fill-up, the engine computer told me I was averaging 16.1 mpg... the second fill-up (I installed my AIRAID CAI at 1/2 full tank) I got 14.55 mpg - the engine computer said 18.1!
From what I'm reading, it sounds like people are seeing better MPG once the engine has a few thousand miles on it... will I be stuck at 14 mpg forever, or can I expect some improvement? BTW, that paltry 14 mpg is with half highway driving!
Still love the Jeep, and will have to deal with the mileage regardless - just hoping that there's better mileage around the corner. Thoughts?

Those mpg's for the JK dont seem bad to me, I have a G6 GTP sedan with the 3.9L 240hp engine, I am getting around 20mpg for city and highway. Of course I drive it a little hard when I am running late for work.. So for me going to a JK in april, I think I should balance out since I wont be going as fast in it. Thats another reason the wife is all for the Jeep purchase!

I have read on various forums that the JK with a 6 speed and the 3:21 can get around 23-24 mpg avg. This is in line with what I was thinking. I know if you add larger tires it makes for more rolling resistance, and if you get a little over zealous with your right foot it can eat into your mileage as well.
I have notice that most people who complain about the mileage also complain about the lack of power. This tells me that they are pushing the engine for performance and not necessarily economy.
I would have thought your G6 would get better than that. My 2004 Corvette 5.7L (350hp/350 tq) with a 4speed auto gets around 24 in town and about 29-30 on the highway. This is my economy car.
