Help Needed
alright so here is my situaion. i am going to Massachusetts tomorrow to pick up my new JK. its from a private seller, so i cant get any help from a dealer on this.
the problem is the title for the JK is held electronically, and i cant get it until the seller deposits the money in the bank and they send the title to him, he signs it and then sends it to me. im trying to find a legal way of getting it back into NYS, but everything i have found requires me to have the title in hand or has some other gliche. i looked into temp. tags, but from what i read online i can only get them if i am transporting a vehicle from point A to point B all within NYS, or if i am transporting a vehicle out of NYS. it doesnt say anything about being able to get them to move a vehicle from out of state into NYS. im wondering if i can manage to get the JK accros the NYS border and to a DMV, can i get temp. tags at that point or will they deny me b/c the JK still oficially "resides" in MA. (hopefully that makes sense). i have no way other than to drive it since i have nothing to tow it with, and my friend needs his dealer plates tomorrow, so that option is out. am i missing something, or does anyone know what i can do? thanks in advance.

not from new york... but they have something like that here in MD where you can't tag the vehicle till you have the title and you can't have the titled till its been inspected. but to get the vehicle in to the state and drive it to an inspection station, you have to go to the DMV and tell them you need a 30 day temp tag which allows you to drive the vehicle while its getting "ready" for tags. thats how its done here in MD... i would think NY would do the same... i'd check the local DMV and see about getting a temp tag.
thanks. ive been to the dmv a few times and they insist the only way for me to get any sort of tag or anything that allows me to drive the vehicle legally requires me to have the title in my hand. kind of stupid, but im too excited about getting a new jeep to be too pissed about it.
Have you contacted his lien holder? The may be able to help you.
Are you financing the vehicle? If so, have you talked to your bank? They may also be able to help.
Get an agreement in writing and signed by both the seller and the buyer detailing this transaction.
Regardless, you are goign to be waiting a short while to get the title.

When I used to sell cars, NY was always a difficult state to deal with. They are very regimented and will not waiver on anything. The only thing that I can think of is to keep the sellers plate on the vehicle and overnight it back to him when you get home. That will make the vehicle legal to drive. I would think that since the trust level is there since you are paying for a vehicle without receiving the title. Most banks will take up to three weeks for a title to arrive, FYI.
thanks for all of the suggestions. i just drove home with the sellers plates like a few people suggested. i was just trying to find a way to get it registered so i can drive it in the mean time as well. i really hope it doesnt take that long to release the title. i cant have it sitting in my driveway taunting me like that.
