I recently bought my Rubicon. This isn't my first Jeep but it is my first Jeep with electronic disconnect. I see that it gives me great articulation when disconnected but exactly how is it doing that? I know this is probably a dumb question but what the hell??
It gives me enough articulation that I can stuff one of my 33's underneith the front fender and keep the other firmly on the ground with a 2 1/2 " lift. So that's fine but does it give as much articulation as quick disconnect swaybar links? Just wondering.....

It's the same thing, just electrically operated. That can be good or bad depending on... well, whether it works. I'm not sure anyone who hasn't had problems with theirs would say it's not as good as manual quick discos. However, the chance that they could give problems disconnecting or (arguably) more importantly reconnecting is enough for some folks to dislike them.
it's an electromagnetic system ( a very strong magnet). So when it's disconnected, it's off, and on for when it's connected. It's a very good and reliable system IMO.

A magnet is holding my sway bar together??!

Just kidding! I knew it was something like that. Thanks for the info. I do love disconneting at the push of a button!
No dude, your links stay connected to the sway bar and axle, but the sway BAR itself has a mechanism with a splined sleeve spliced into it behind your bumper on the passenger-side. Kind of like the old Vacuum Disco Dana 30 axles had on the passenger-side axle shaft.
A collar slides over the splines to lock and unlock the split sway bar.

Calypso, think of taking a hack saw and cutting your sway bar in half, leaves you esentially without a sway bar, in other words disconnected, well thats whats happening when you hit that button, only thing is, you can magically reconnect it with the push of the button...rather than having to weld the bar back together, same effect though. Absolutely same effect as disconnecting sway links, only SO much easier

Thanks of all the info, guys. I'm a pretty good mechanic but I haven't dealt with the elec disco. Looking at it, it's hard to tell what's going on inside. I had heard about the "magnet" but it did sound a little odd if that was all that was involved.
I always knew it was the actual bar that was disconnecting, I just didn't know the details of HOW it worked.
Now I can say, I learned something today!
