Is this illegal?
Wow! I went out of town on business for a few days and come back to full on debate. Thanks for ALL the input. Some were helpful. Spoke to a retired local judge the other day (he was a TN judge) who told me he would probably laugh this off if it came across his bench. Sorry for those of you in UT who thought I was in some super new jeepin spot. I guess I'll just take it off but it has always been a good conversation piece.
If you're calling to ask if it's "ticketable" by explaining what happened, and they tell you the code you are violating, then there's no need to "look it up and see if you are violating it". The officer just told you that you were. So did the one who gave you the warning.
I betchya it's not the first time a cop misunderstood the law, either. Now I'm not suggesting that the particular cop who warned the OP was incorrect about the law but, regardless of what a cop says, I think it's always best to check the law for yourself to determine whether or not you actually violated it.
