Default Mod Insurance

I totaled my 07 JK Rubicon June 09, due to a vehicle making a left turn into my lane. I rolled over several times. Minor injuries to me. I was dealing with Farmers insurance. When they talked about settling, I mentioned I had over $8000 dollars in after market mods. They told me to provide a detailed list and they would make some compensation. They paid about 60% of the cost of the mods.....

Go out to your ins company's website and take a look, or talk to an agent.

This is for Progressive...
Custom Parts and Equipment/Accessory Coverage
When you purchase Comprehensive or Collision coverage, at least $1,000 of Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE)/Accessory coverage is included in most states. You can purchase up to $4,000 in additional CPE coverage to cover up to $5,000 custom parts and equipment. Certain limitations apply to this coverage.

This was the same answer that I got from State Farm. They said keep receipts and it will be covered.

I am an insurance agent licensed in several states and specializing in auto. Some of the companies I write coverage for do not cover mods unless specifically listed and most will non-renew or cancel you at renewal for advising of mods for off road use (winch). Some States require the insurer to wait up to a year at times to be able to non- renew you. You will not be notified of pending action until they are legally required to tell you. I cannot name companies but here is some info from a major one.

These are excerpts from a Texas Personal Auto Policy.

5. Custom parts or equipment means paint, equipment, devices, accessories, enhancements, and changes, other than
those which are original manufacturer installed, which:
a. Are permanently installed or attached; or
b. Alter the appearance or performance of a vehicle.
This includes any electronic equipment, antennas, and other devices used exclusively to send or receive audio, visual,
or data signals, or play back recorded media, other than those which are original manufacturer installed, that are
permanently installed in the your covered auto, using bolts or brackets, including slide-out brackets.

Here is where the exclusion is.

EXCLUSIONS

We will not pay for:
Loss to custom parts or equipment unless the existence of those custom parts or equipment has been previously reported to us and an endorsement to the policy has been added.

Most underwriting guidelines (not for the public) advise that they do not write coverage for vehicles with an installed winch or vehicle used for off road purposes.

You may be covered, unless specifically excluded, as above. In most cases, you will be non-renewed at renewal if you have a claim and the adjuster brings it to the underwriting department’s attention.

I must say most agents are oblivious to this because every insurance company has different policies under the same company (different risk classes) and do not have them memorized. Be careful when someone says it’s covered. Most of the time, when you call a large company directly, they are Customer Service agents and are not licensed. They are just operating under the use of some one else’s insurance license.

My advice is getting it in writing. Also, look into getting coverage through an Agent who is a sponsor with the forum who is fully aware what you are using your vehicle for and what it has and most importantly read your auto policy yourself to verify you are covered.
