So I've been getting the bug for a '12 unlimited and been looking around, pricing them online, etc... The one question I have is what is different on the "max tow" package vs the "regular tow" package?

I know you need the max tow package to pull over 2000 pounds which I do every now and then. AND I know the max package has 3.73 gears as part of the package. So to confuse things for me, I was on a lot looking at a '12 which listed options of 3.73 gears and the "regular" tow package...What gives with this max tow? Tranny cooler? Special shift points? Nothing at all? Around here none of the dealers are stocking anything with the Max tow package (or very few of them). Just a curiousity point...

 

I heard somewhere that the "max tow package" is no longer offered for '12s. You just have to do the 3.73 gears and the tow package separately. If the '12 Wrangler you're looking at has a tow package and 3.73 gears, then you're good to go. That has everything the "max tow package" would have.

All auto 2012s should have a transmission cooler, regardless of the tow package. Check in the grill on the Jeep you're looking at to make sure.

Without a quick search, I'm thinking the max tow package has sway control. I just ordered a JKUR with it two weeks ago.

 

Checked that, just bumped the ratio to a 3:73. The regular tow package had the sway control as well.

 

Yep only difference is the Max tow includes the 3.73 gears, whereas trailer tow only includes 3.21, but you can add 3.73... I do believe they are trying to clean it up now by allowing you to order only one.
