Default My JK was totaled today!!!

Had a lousy commute today and was rear-ended on the way home by a chevy pickup going about 40-50 mph. The guy was messed up on heroin and never braked when he plowed into me and I then hit the two cars in front of me. First, everyone was okay but not sure about the driver of the pickup. He seemed out of it but couldn't tell if it was the drugs or the impact. Police hauled him to hospital but he had a suspended license and an arrest warrant. No chance of him having insurance.

I'm impressed with how the jeep protected the occupant (me) for such a hard hit. I'm guessing it was likely totalled but might have been way worse for me in an older model. I was stopped and on the phone (okay I know you shouldn't talk and drive but jeep was stopped). My phone went flying and took about 30 minutes to find it. His truck bumper went under my jeep and hit my rear axel, pushed it about an inch forward and bent axel and probably frame, caved in my tailgate and floor boards, bent the entire body at several of the body mounts, bent most of the passenger side so the door jam was compressed about a half inch, bent up the cheesy front bumper when I plowed into the HHR in front of me. I had a bottle of tire sealant buried in the back and it exploded. My only injury is a hell of a head ache because of that rock hard headrest. I was surprised the airbags didn't go off but I have no idea how hard I hit he car in front of me, but hit it hard enough cave it the back of the HHR almost a foot.

I do have few questions when dealing with insurance. Does anyone know how the insurance company will handle all the aftermarket mods. I have over $4000 into the jeep, plus a lot of my labor. Will insurance cover the mods and labor to replace. Guess this gives me an opportunity to change my mind on any of the mods, only problem is I liked the jeep exactly the way it was.

Most enjoyable car I've ever had plus pretty safe in a wreck. Glad everyone is okay but not looking forward to dealing with insurance and having to start over on a new jeep.

Man, I'm really sorry to hear about your JK but am really glad to hear you're alright. Sucks about the driver that hit you and that you're gonna have to deal with your insurance company. Regarding your mods, that's a tough one... depending on how you had your policy setup and with who, you may end up just getting the price of your Jeep - mods not included. Hope I'm wrong and that things work out for you. Good luck.

It really depends who YOUR insurance company is. It also depends on he mods. I suggest you call your agent with the same question.
Bust out the receipts and try to get everything you can!!!
On the other hand if the guy that hit you by chance has insurance than everything is covered. In the event that they do not get covered then you'll have to sue the guy that hit you.
If you have any more specific questions send me a pm.

Good Luck!!!

Oh and...

Yea good to hear your ok... and unfortunately through your experience you showed us how good the jk takes an accident. About the mods it has to deal with the policy you have and if it includes any loss of aftermarket parts. Most people that have aftermarket parts forget to include that in the policy since it will generally result in an increase in your premiums. But dont accept their initial settlement since they will likely lowball...so try your best and show them your receipts even though they likely will not pay for the cost of labor which is usually the big chunk of cost. The best of luck to you!

my wife was recently in an accident, and my first thought you your mods questions was that it might be considered personal property that was damaged in the accident. she had geico, and they wanted to know about her watch that was busted, jewelry that was lost, etc. don't know if this applies to mods, but just a thought

glad you're ok
