This is the new quadratec winch the Q11000, it says it is rated for 4door JK's. When is a winch too large or over price for ones needs. I have never been 4 wheeling or needed a winch. The trip on the 18-19 will be my first. I see alot of winchs on Jeeps. Is needed it one time worth the $400 for the winch and $1000 for the bumper.

Here is another thought how about a removable winch, the kind that attaches to the reciever hitch?

The solenoid is not waterproof. It is water resistant and will be fine in rain, snow, etc. Just don't try to run it underwater as if it were a Warn 9.5ti

My last winch was a 12k Badlands (harbor freight) that I paid 299 for brand new. I used it completely submerged as it had a waterproof selonoid. I'm a little disappointed that any new winch wouldnt also be a match for harbor freight. I only sold the one i had as i made money by selling it with my bumper. Engo is the same winch as badland but more expensive. Looks like i'll wait for harbor freight to run another sale on the 12k

I'm still learning about winches so help me here. So the solenoid is not waterproof, but if you were to remote mount it in the engine bay somewhere and it was out of water could you still operate it if the winch was mounted low in the bumper and it was submerged?

I would not recommend running the winch while fully submerged. If you were looking for a winch that can be ran fully submerged, I'd suggest going for a hydraulic winch from Warn or Milemarker.

Not to take away from Quadratec's new winch, I love quadretec and am currently waiting on some axle shafts i just ordered from them. BUT I did just purchase the Engo e9000 winch from the jeepaddons rep here on the forum for $280 shipped to my door. Its a pretty solid winch, its loud but thats really the only down side. search winch shoot out on google and find a certain magazines review on engo. its pretty impressive.

Competition is good for our economy right?

only you can decide if it is worth it. Let me dust of my old quote/comparison to a pistol. If it is something you carry every day and your life will depend on it working when it needs to, no amount of money will be too much for that reliability. If you use that pistol only at the range and the consequence of it going click rather than bang is that you set it down and borrow a buddies gun, well then just spend the money you can afford.

They need to offer a Dyneema rope option but brake heat could be an issue. An automatic clutch would also be an improvement.
