Second vehicle or get rid of jk?
Had an 08 unlimited, had it paid for. Traded for a 11 silverado, owed 12k on it and traded for my 12 unlimited. Owe 13k on it. Got caught sniffing a 14 gmc Sierra. I honestly don't think Americans are happy unless were in debt.
Well at least you're not upside down and have some good equity when you get a new vehicle, which makes it easier. I've had three vehicles in 2 years. Had an '07 unlimited that was having a transfer case leaking problem, so I traded it in for a 4-runner (horrible decision), then went back to a '12 jk 6 months later. Luckily jeeps hold their value so I'm never buried, but yes, I agree that we love to be in debt. My goal is to not be, so I need to decide if I should keep this thing or find something more economical that I can pay off. Maybe in the future I can get another jk and pay cash. Tough decision for sure.
If it were only that easy. With my setup I'll never get 20 mpg. I drive about 65 mph max and can sometimes squeeze out close to 17mpg on highways. I also am at work 15 minutes early everyday, so I'm never rushing. If I drive 50 I doubt it'd make much of a difference.
Go ahead and forget leases, the mileage limitations will get you.
Go ahead and forget "new". If this is purely economics and you hope that owning two vehicles will be cheaper than owning one, well then one better be pretty cheap. Any vehicle over 10k will unlikely ever allow you to break even in less than 5 years.
I recommend finding a fun older car. I bought a 90 miata for $3500. It gets 30+ mpg and parts are cheap, they also have a history of being low maintenance. I enjoy driving it and will break even financially in less than 2 years. Win-win.
