Touchy subject: Are you Hardcore, Softcore, a Poser, or somewhere in-between?
So - this is a bit of a touchy subject for a lot of folks, and people seem to get pretty defensive... but what kind of Jeeper are you? I've read varying estimates that claimed as few as 50% of Wrangler owners will ever leave the pavement, while others claim that a mighty 80% will take theirs offroading. I'm just curious what percentage of Jeepers on this forum will ever offroad their Wranglers, versus how many will be content just cruising topless to the mall, beach, etc.
Disclaimer: The Wrangler is an American icon, and America is all about freedom - there's no law saying you have to lift your Jeep sky-high and go drive over the nearest boulder. We all have the freedom to use our Wrangler as we want to, and the only rule is: have fun with it (and wave to your fellow Jeepers!). Personally, I enjoy moderate offroading, but that's just me - I am NOT so hardcore that I needed to buy a Rubicon. So when I'm asking if you're hardcore or a poser, it's all in good fun. :D Please don't turn this into a "Jeep purist" us-against-them battle or anything like that. And before you get all defensive, Mr. & Mrs. Mallrunner, I'm not insinuating that you're really posers if you don't ever offroad your Jeep - granted, it'll cry itself to sleep at night, but that's no reflection on you as a person. :rotflmao1: |
hardwood.not a lot of dirt left in South Florida but when i find it i go.that being said i have no need for a lift, dirt tires or any hard core stuff.so my jeep is like a swiss army knife or a jack of all trades to me.dirt, mall, work you name it and my jeep dose it all well and with more fun then anything else i can think of.

I can't speak for everyone else but here is a sample of my intentions for my JK

This would make for a good poll!
Personally, I probably fit closest with the softcore description. ;) I ordered a Rubi and may end up using its capabilities, not because I go on the hardest trails, but because I'm not that experienced of an off-roader. I generally am the type that likes to use my vehicle to get somewhere (more remote hiking spot for instance) rather than to just run trails all day - but I'll certainly have a good time while getting there! There is something about driving a Wrangler. They are so fun to drive and confidence inspiring that it seems you're drawn to every curb, mud puddle, or dirt road that you happen to see while driving. Thus, I would be surprised if there are any Wranglers out there that see zero "off-roading", loosely defined. |
I'm probably pretty softcore. I have plans to run around in the sand at the beach, but that seems pretty light. I tackled a forest service road two days ago, which was easy as pie. This is my first Jeep so I think the more I get comfortable with it, the more I'll be willing to try more challenging offroad adventures.
|
Your missing an important one, people who mod their Jeeps but don't necessarily take them offroad. That accounts for a lot of people. My JK is lifted and has other mods but it won't see much offroad other than the beach because thats where I live and im surrounded by ocean and flat land.
|
Hardwood for me please. I would like to see more wheelin', but flat west Texas dosen't allow for it where I am. Later this year there is supposed to be an OHV park opening only a couple hours away and I plan on being there often.
|
I merged the two identical threads.... and voted hardwood. :D

I'll say the hardwood i'm doing some moods but I dont have much chance to take it off road.
|
I have no problem being softwood. I plan on towing mine behind our motorhome to colorado and other family vacations. I have two young daughters and doing rough rock trails will not be accepted very well by the three women on my life. I do plan on taking it on many trails up in colorado for some really great off road sight seeing. I really loved Lake city and the surrounding trails when I was there last year. I hope to take my new jeep on some trails like that this year. We used ATVs last year and I would take them as well but a family outing in the jeep would be great fun for the softer side of my family. 6 to 8 hour jonts on the ATVs would never fly with the wife and kids. One rain storm and they would be done...
|
I'm the Hardwood type. My Jeep also has to stay low enough to throw and toddler seat in the back.
|
The JK will be built up to at least HardWood or more likely IronWood level
ie, My JK will see many reasonable modifications so as to be capable of handling moderate-to-hard terrain - I'll suffer on-road for it - but it will also remain my daily driver and only see some occasional light offroad use for the first 18months. (The Xterra will be resurrected, SASed and become mostly a trail only rig) … although as the years go by I know the JK will see more and more trail time and run harder and harder trails so that by the end of the 3 years the wheeling I do, “Iron lvl”, will be comparable to it’s build up and full capability. |
I said hardwood, although i am mostly marshmallow at the moment. I tend to be a modaholic by nature, so i doubt that will last, but who knows? there are other things in life besides my Jeep.
ok, quit laughing, i didnt mean it. ;) |
I went the harwood route. I'll be running 35's when the tread or warrany runs out, whichever comes first. I'll also run 4" of lift. I'd rather have a little extra roo for the rubber. Where I'm at it's mostly mud wheeling. My friends did some tire induced body work on our last Saturday outing. You just never know whats under the water's surface. :eek!:
|
I think I like most people will use the JK as a daily driver for a few years, let the warranty run out - then its time to step it up a notch. Hopefully in 4-5 years after she's paid off I can buy another DD - something to haul the JK hopefully, then go crazy.
Hopefully by then my wife makes a lot more money, pigs will fly, monkeys will fly out of my ass, and i'll find that pot at the end of the rainbow - in order to pay for all that. |
Informal Analysis
Well, 71 votes in as of this writing, and we have a pretty textbook-looking bell curve going on... no one wants to go to either extreme, but some of us are looking to go harder, and some softer, than what might be considered "normal" for a Jeep.
As for me, I picked Hardwood - I'd love to go Iron someday, but: 1) the wife controls the pursestrings... which is probably a good thing for the sake of my financial health! She already knows that a lift is going on eventually, as are bigger meats (tires) - the question is: how much more can I get "approval" for in the next 3 years... 2) the terrain available here in CT just doesn't justify going TOO extreme... a lift and some 35"ers will probably carry me safely through anything I'll be able to find around here! In fact, my Sahara may be able to clear 90% of what's availabe STOCK... we'll see! |
my jeep will likely be modded somewhere between hardwood or iron...but my thirst for experience, coupled with a complete disregard for my safety or the cosmetics of my rig will push her to iron.
|
I checked hardwood. I had a lot of fun offroading with my modified '99 TJ before I sold it. Haven't done much with my '07 yet. Heck, I've had it since 12/12/06 and I'm still under 2,000 miles.
I'm not really a big fan of the ORV park rides. To me, it's much more enjoyable to ride a trail that takes you somewhere...like a remote camping spot that not many people can get to. I did that ALOT in my TJ. I like packing up the gear & beer and hanging out with friends in the middle of nowhere for a couple days. No Deliverance jokes please... |
hardwood for me. i'll get to the mods, mud and forest someday :yup:
|
Hardwood.
Our 95 XJ with 330K kilometers Has obviously seen a lot across Canada and the States I pity the guy that ends up with the all wheel drive Safari van we traded for the Unlimited Rubi. Oh-Oh dealer might read. |
I chose hardwood, as I intend on keeping my rubi relatively stock. I am fortunate enough to live in 4 wheeling paradise so I'd be willing to bet that I see more trail time than 99% of the wildly modified rigs that you'll see out there. I have a lot of fun clearing obstacles on 32"s and then waiting for the tourists who trailered a rig on 35"s or 37"s to ask for a strap:thinking: . Practice makes perfect...
|
I scored myself as hardwood because I will be using my JK as my "all purpose vehicle". Leaving the JK stock really isn't an option for me living in Utah. There is simply to much off-roading to be done here to leave it stock, but like I said, it won't be anything major. I recently aquired a 1960 CJ that I plan on modifying as my "Diamond" off-roader. Can't wait to get my JK. It's currently in "E" status. Should be soon.
|
IRON for me, I will only drive it on the weekends so can give up on road some. But when I want to go 50+ miles down the beach one way, or mud at the deer lease. I expect it to perform without any problems.
In about five years it will be a Diamond. |
I'm Hardwood too, although Pikacho said it best "More like Ironwood".
I don't really think my ride will ever be a trail only rig, but it (As funding allows) will eventually be set up up to take on some serious Earth. :yup: |
Hardwood to start off with and after the warranty is gone it will slowly blend with iron and become Ironwood.
|
Hardwood - but as others have suggested - sometimes maybe not intentionally!
This will be my everyday vehicle and will also be our tow vehicle for trips to the beach and mountains and everything in between. Plan relatively low end mods - hoped that the Rubicon wouldn't need too much to keep up with us! ...but given the fact that we never really know where we'll be - I'm sure we'll end up in places we probably shouldn't be and then I'll be very thankful we took the plunge! |
My Rubicon will have a winch right away. It will have a moderate lift and larger mud tires eventually. I will still drive it daily. I may eventually have two sets of tires/wheels--all terrains for road trips. The winch is a must because I expect to test the limits of the stock Rubicon and still be able to leave the woods when I'm done. I expect the Rubicon's limits to be very high. My ordered Rubicon is in "D" status now. I voted hardwood.

I picked Hardwood because it's hilarious. Did you ask me if I'm on Viagra?
This is all natural!:rotflmao1: |

Whenever I get mine it will look like it's built for offroading but it's not. I just like the look. But don't be suprised when you see it covered in mud. You will never catch me climbing up a rock mountain though either. Mud washes off - dents do not.

Light to medium trails and mud... 2.5" life and 33" AT's...
but... cans, pumpkins, misc fruits and veggies, and the occasional propane tank will be terrified as my rig moves forward carrying my Elite RAC (Redneck Assault Crew) |

Iron . ? Maybe....
I'm a new owner, I'll pick up mine in few days, and I am sure that I want to build it for weekends only. We have 1000km's of open free sandy dunes. I want to do mine similar to the image attached. |
Hardwood plus, I don't do much on the mod end, but I like to see how far I can go and what I can do with a mostly stock rig. Slow and steady!

Born Ready
I hope our JK was born mentally ready, I will help her out with the mechanics.
She must prove herself by running all of the trails our FJ40 (now for sale) did. To include: RUBICON, DUSY/ERSHEM, SURPRISE CANYON, GOLDEN SPIKE, BEHIND THE ROCKS, MOUNT OF THE HOLY CROSS, INDEPENDENCE, CARNAGE, and so on and on. JK Unlimited Rubicon 3" Teraflex rear grab handles |
