Default Side Airbags

What do you think of the side airbags?

How many of you spent the $400+ for this option?

Are they really in the seat? that is what my dealer told me.

I can't answer it since it has never been activated. I'm note sure how it will be of value since i drive without the doors and top most of the yr. mine came with it. they are located in the front seat.

they are worth it.. imagine getting t-boned while your girlfriend/wife/child/mother is sitting there.. then ask yourself, was it worth it?

My unlimited has them and if I had to purchase it all over again, I would get them again. I also have 1/2 doors, and in that situation, it's a must.

I am sure they offer some protection. I am not sure where they are located and I don't have them. I most likely should but since a lot of my driving is doorless I am screwed if t-boned (although I have seen a picture or two of how well a jeep protected it's passengers without them doors on and it looks good so far). In another post you were talking about wanting things (or to do things) that might stretch the budget. The question is not are side air bags at $400 a good thing but rather if I get them can I afford the wheels/tires I want or a lift. In other words if I get this what can I do withoiut. I stated as much in my post to that thread.

Yup, they are in the seats. Thats part of the fun for companies who make seat covers. And yes, they do have seat covers that will work with the side airbags.

Are they worth it? I'd say yes. I've seen a few crashes with side impacts (no JKs yet), and from my experience (as limited as it is) they seem to work well.

How well will they work with the doors off... couldn't say. But its that much more protection when the doors are on.
Also, it may save more in the long run with insurance discounts as well.

Though to be honest, I got my JK the week they came out, and I didn't even pay attention to all the options... so I just 'lucked out' with getting them.

I'd be interested to see them, if someone comes across pics of the inflated side airbags from a JK.

I would say get them .. you're safety and / or life is worth a whole lot more than a lift or new tires........ so save up an extra month or 2 and get your mods a little later....

I'd say get them if you find one with them,, it seems to be a rare option,, If it has 1/2 doors its mandatory tho... I'm picking mine up tomorrow and it doesnt have them.. I really wanted them but it would cost way more than 400,, the only ones that had them were listed way higher than what I got.. If they were tru side curtains I would have held out for them but,,
Good luck,,

Yep...they are mandatory on all half doors...this could be the reason why DC is hesitant about offering aftermarket 1/2 doors...could it be liability?

The full doors side inpact isnt great when compaired to a car,, but its 3 star? with the 1/2 door it needs the air bag to stay the same rating.. The full door with the air bag didnt rate much different than without the airbag.. Thats why I didnt loose sleep on not getting it..
