Default Slipping in gears what can it be??

I am on my way from SF to LA and I need a quick answer (hopefully)

When I start off 7/10 times the engine revs up to 3k and nothing happens. This is while being in Drive. (automatic)

At 3k it "catches" and it throws me forward.

Also happens at certain speeds on the Highway and I also sometimes feel a loss in power.

It did not do this yesterday so it's something new.

Anyone ? anything?

I should add to the question, is it still safe to drive it home, 340 miles to go. Rather not get stranded on 5 south

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? (engine idling; transmission warmed up; move selector through all the gears, ending in park or neutral)

Just did this and I'm not sure where I can see the reading? On the dash? Sorry but I love driving my jeep and let others do the working on it.

The auto trans has a fluid level dip stick under the hood just like the engine has a oil level dip stick. It has markings on it that will let you know if it's low or not. I'm betting it is.

Ok good to know. I bought ATF -3 as that's all they had thinking there was only one kind.

Where do I add it once I have it? Can't find the cap in the engine bay

You have to use a small funnel and pour it (slowly) right down the dip stick tube.
