Stopped twice.
Inappropriate use of authority???
I think it's great when the police can interact with the public without citing someone!!
I got pulled over years ago in my FJ because the cop loved it. After talking a few minutes he mentioned he had to sell his FJ and I happened to have a friend who was lookng for one so I took his info. I told my hubby the info and he had to see the cop's FJ for himself and we ended up buying it and wheeled it for another 6yrs!!

Too much can go wrong on a traffic stop for a cop to pull someone over just to compliment the vehicle they are driving. I don't think people take into consideration all the risk associated with making a traffic stop. More police officers are killed during a "routine traffic stop" than any other police function. You have to worry about other traffic around you, and how they will react to your overhead lights (drunks believe it or not are drawn to it and have a tendancy to run into the back of the patrol car). You have to worry about the person you are pulling over. You have no idea who they are, what kind of day they are having, what kind of crime they may have just committed, what they may be capable of, who else is in the car and what history they may have etc..... If something were to go sideways on one of these "compliment" stops, and something bad happened, it would be the cop who would be hung out to dry. No reasonable suspicion or probable cause for the stop = bad, bad, things. This is how cops get into trouble. What's next, pulling over the next vehicle because you wanted to compliment the woman driving on how good she looked? It is illegal and should not be done period. Any cops on here who think it is ok to do this are foolish and are asking for trouble.
Hellbound, your story cracked me up! I have also pulled over fellow Jeepers before, but I'm aware of the fact that they get nervous seeing the cherries behind them and I don't want them to veer into a ditch. I just pull along side with no lights and ask if they would mind pulling over so I can admire their rig. No one has been upset yet... probably because Jeep folks are so cool in general.
BTW, I'm always aware of good tactics, and traffic stops are one of the most dangerous encounters... but community policing is also an important aspect of the job. We interact with people all day long and try to be as safe as possible.

Wow, I guess living in Reno, "The Biggest Little City in the World" has it's perks.
The cops pull over to say "hi" when you're walking your dog!!
I like the fact that our local police and sheriffs take a minute to interact positively with the communtiy.
I'm not sure of the legalities in our area but it is nice to know that our local law enforcemnet isn't looking to "get you" everytime they see you.
We have a program in our area where cops pull you over for doing the right thing (stopping for pedestrians, using your turn signal....) and give you free movie tickets!
I guess it all depends on the area you live in.
