Default Trail flags - why?

What's the point of trail flags? I see them on so many trails and I believe they are required in a lot of spots. Do they really do that much good? Seems like a lot of places are heavily wooded and you're not going to see that little orange flag no matter how high you hoist it...just curious on maybe the origins of this practice and opinions on its practicality.

I thought this was a sand dune thing where you could see the flag past the next dune before the actual vehicle. No?

You need it at Paragon.

No sand dunes there.

Smaller scale, but pretty much where flags come in handy!

I was pissed that I had to buy one at The Badlands... but it does make a nice souvenir, I guess.
