Default Thanks

My old jeep I had I kept all my reciepts for oil, filters etc. Seems like I am going to have to be super diligent with it this time around. Receipts, etc. I do all my own work. Everytime I have been to a dealer something wasn't done right or just wasn't done. Like Diff fliud. I am sorry but when there isn't even a mark on the plug or a bit of spillage. I say "yah suspect" then you check the oil and see yup yah bastards didn't do shit. Might have to buy a nice little binder thingy like a "trapper keeper" and save all the info.

"yah suspect" taken from Good Will Hunting
"trapper keeper" taken from back in the day, I had one. Did you?

Huffines in Lewisville is pretty good. I've had the chance to meet Mr. Huffines son who runs everything. It was a chance meeting outside of the dealership in a social setting and he is passionate about his customers; so it wasn't a canned response.

They are still a business, but I dont think they are out to mess you over.

Now for the scoop!

I went to the dealer Friday (9/9/11) to get the oil changed on my 2009 Rubicon Unlimited. It's the same dealer that has done all but one scheduled oil changes since the Jeep was purchased new. (was on vacation and needed one done while on the road) I pull up to the service drive, get out, hand the key to the service writer, and he hands me a "work release contract" like usual. But this time, the contract is a Xerox copy of an original with this little statement already conveniently copied on there. I literally blurted out WTF! I don't usually voice profanities in public places but come on! I'm a simple firefighter, but I've been in the military. I don't sign anything without at least speed-reading it first. Especially handwritten stuff.
Anyway, my response obviously puts the service writer on the aggrivated defense and he responds with a terse, WHAT?! Which was the wrong thing to do in my book. But regardless, I rewind a notch or two and calmly explain with that written on there, I'm not signing it. He, still trying to keep it escalated, bull-headedly refuses to do my oil change. By that time the service manager understands I'm not going away with these results, gets a fresh contract and walks over for me to sign. They insisted that Chrysler is behind this action. I'm not sure if that is fact or not. Regardless, having bought one of the last Jeeps with the lifetime drivetrain service contracts, the potential for loosing a lot of money by signing that was genuine. And I'm not the only one that this is happening to. On each of the service writer's desks was a large stack of identical contracts and they were handing them out for people to sign like cheap flyers.

The majority, not all, dealerships are horribly unscrupulous when it comes to service. They know what falls under the warranty and fix it billing the manufacturer (which is OK by me, but not always necessary repairs), but the non-warranty work is where their true colors show. My wife took her car in to be inspected and the service rep told her that while they passed, he would recommend that the brake pads be replaced lest they become "unsafe". She called me and I went down there. I had the guy show me what he was considering to be "unsafe" and had him pull a new set of pads out for comparison. There was still more than half of the thickness left. Caught in his scam, he tried to rationally explain to me that over time they would become "unsafe". Uhhhh.......well isn't that most brakes? Even Carbon Ceramics wear out eventually and become "unsafe". Why would I pay $300 for you to replace an item that still has over 50% of it's life left? He told me it was up to me to make the decision. More like it was up to me to make sure that he didn't rip us off. We never returned to that stealership, but enough people must bite on that ploy that they think it's worth doing. Otherwise you would think the lost business and loss of goodwill would negate any advantage. Anyway, as I see it, the vehicle is only warrantied against egregious failures and workmanship issues. People asked me if I was crazy modding my new Jeep and "voiding" the warranty. Anything that was going to be covered under warranty by the dealer will still be covered with my mods. If I bent a C or stripped a gear, there is only a 50/50 chance it would be covered and there are a multitude of examples where they pull the "abuse" card because you have taken the vehicle off-road. Maintain your vehicle and take care of it like you want it to last and it likely will.

That did not come from chrysler. I just walked into our service department and asked. The only thing you are required to do for the lifetime powetrain is have a inspection once every five years. That is it.

That's the only thing you are required to have the dealer do.
You are still required to do (or have done) the maintenance outlined in the owner's manual.
