Back when the JK was under development and prototype all the "jeepers" said JK was for "Just Kidding" due to the many changes that wrangler owners didn't like. Mainly the 4 doors and the loss of the straight 6 4.0 engine. At this time there were also rumours of a IFS front end.

I think at Jeep they acknowledged the fact that the KJ was absolutely no good (been there and done that and thoroughly hated the thing) and they wanted to turn that situation around > therefore JK.
