Default At what point do you need to regear?

Just about to replace my Black JK Sahara with a Mango JKU with a six speed.. thank god, I miss the manual trans!! I am adding 33's as well.

Will I need to regear? Assuming I don't, what will I notice as different with the 33's on?

Evaulate the driveability of the Jeep based on your conditions once you have the new tires on. My assumption is that you are asking this as a daily driver question. With 33" I don't believe you are going to "need" to regrear. Maybe need to drop O/D off on the highway to prevent the trans from searching for a gear.. Here is the progression I would see.
1) Put on new Meat and evaluate
2) Maybe get an AEV procal (about $150) reset tire diameter, get shifts and speedo corrected.
3) If you can live with the new characteristics, put the $1000+ toward other mods.

Been running mine (35") without gears for a while and it does not bother me.

I'm in the same situation. I'm adding 33's and just asked the same question. The general answer was dont bother wasting your money on gears until you run 35's.

Thanks..yes, a daily driver. So what I gather is...
  1. The Speedo won't be accurate.. I am guessing it will show you going faster than you are..
  2. Hunting for a gear? How will a manual hunt? Maybe a dumb question...but those are the best questions!!

The only gear hunting will be done by you since it's a six speed, I don't think that guy read all of your post. I went from the 225/75 16 pizza cutters to 265/70 17 toyo m/t's on aluminum wheels and I did have to adjust my driving style. I have a six speed with 3.21's. It should be totally livable for you, just get used to not lugging around in too high a gear.

I'm not going to regear until I move up to 35's, but do what makes you happy, and what you need on the street and the trail.

You won't need a re gear. 35's and an auto like me and yessiree you'll need a re gear.

Larger tires affect your speedometer by showing you going slower than you're actually going. Mine shows 60 and I'm actually doing about 64-66.

That's what I thought.. thanks.

Since I am going from the JK with auto, right into the JKU with the manual and 33's, I'll be adjusting my driving style more for the manual than the 33's.. It will be fresh, given I have no seat time with the JKU & this manual..

Sounds like I should be fine.

hmmm... gotta get my head around that. I figured that since the tires are spinning faster with the larger rubber, it would show you going slower than you really are...

Needing and wanting are two different things. Even w/ the 33s you will feel a difference in power. Not as big a difference than a regear, but you might consider a Superchips programmer to help out. It may be all you need......even with the 35s. Every person has different ideas about what they want/need in the power dept.

I suspect I would have felt a more dramatic difference had I been driving the six'r with the stock wheels.. but moving from the auto to the six with the 33's and not having a chance to drive the 33's prior will likely make it less dramatic...

I guess...
