Default What's My 2012 Sahara Capable Of?

Picked up my 2012 Unlimited Sahara yesterday - first Wangler. I'm anxious to get it off-road. Here in Colorado the "trail guides" have a difficulty rating system from 1-10. I do a bit of off-road motorcycling and a rating of 4/5 looks like it would be a real challenge in my Sahara. So what is the vehicle capable of, in stock form/OE tires? I am a novice and I don't want to tear up my new Wangler but I want to have fun with it. Thanks for your courtesy and advise.

I have a stock 2010 sport, and even with the minivan engine it never ceases to amaze me where it can go. It doesn't do amazing in mud, but that's cause the sra tires aren't aggressive at all. If you have doubts about a trail definitely take someone with you just in case you get suck.

My advice would be to start with the easiest trails you can find and learn how to negotiate small obstacles and build your confidence. Don't be in a rush to push it to the limits if your not familiar with off-roading in a jeep. Stock jk's are vary capable and basically spank moderately modded tj's off-road. Soooo its also easier to get into trouble if you don't take your time to know your vehicle. It's really best to go with a group /club when you first get started.

I see that you are in Boulder. While I am not too familiar with trails on the front range, you should have zero worries of trails in the 3 category solo, level 5 would probably be my limit if I were in your shoes, on minimally aggressive tires. I am around the Roaring Fork Valley, and you would enjoy yourself on trails like, Express Creek Rd., Richmond Ridge, Kobey Park/Lenado area, exploring around Montezuma basin and the lower part of Pearl Pass after spring runoff, Lincoln Creek, Cottonwood Pass, and many others.

In Moab (who in Colorado doesn't make trips to Moab) I would think that a trail like Fins N Things would be right at about the limit of the Jeep, and threshold of comfort. There are plenty of 'nervous' moments but barring a catastrophe, you shouldn't have any kind of damage. PM if you need any other help or recommendations should you ever head this way.
