I would agree. It's not that long but is very technical and requires more from you then any other trail I have been on. But Clackey says it best when he said not to do this one alone regardless of your experience.

Anyone up for a weekday trip? I'm game.

Doble is really a ghost town now. It was a large gold mining town in the 1800s. The road to Gold Mountain and John bull is just past Doble and to the left.

I'd suggest getting Rick Russell's pocket maps for Big Bear and Arrowhead. Give yourself a looong weekend. Do John Bull, Gold Mountain, Holcomb Creek, Crab Flats. These can be done in that order from east to west. They're almost connected. Don't forget to bring your fishin' pole for Big Bear lake.
Any camping up by Big Bear? Or anywhere along these trails?

Serrano campground is on the northwest side of Big Bear lake and is right on the water. If you can get reservations, it's my top choice. They are a couple more on the east side in the pine trees. You can camp in the forest. There are lots of little turn offs you can dry camp at.

There's also a neat zoo on the eastern side of Big Bear City that's neat. There are cougars, grizzlies and a couple of HUGE buffalo (bison?). I'm not sure if it's still open as they've always been pressured by developers and budget constraints.

Serrano campground is almost always full now that Hannah Flats is closed. I just stayed at Holcomb Creek last week it's about 3 mi. up a fire road but there was only 1 other guest there. And, it's only $14/night since there are no hook ups. Gold Mountain was sweet didn't bang out John Bull yet since the guy I went with was in his 1500 Silverado. A mid-week run might be in my future I'm off Wed.-Thurs.
