Left Hand Canyon, CO - 7-5-09
Just returned from a great trip through left hand canyon, which is just north of Boulder, CO. Here are some pics:
The start of our day...

Heading up the trail

My jeep chillin' out while we scout out what is around the corner

Not a bad view

Another vanity picture

Me getting some help down a very steep (the picture doesn't do it justice) gnarly trail

My friend Ron having some fun when he could (i was holding him back a bit being stock
)

What the?

We stopped because some moron's left a fire burning.
So being the responsible ones, we put it out.

We came upon this guy who got himself stuck

Once he was out of the way, he hung around to see how it's done

and of course the stock JK had no problems

We made it to the bottom of the clouds

All in all a good day!

It was my first time up there (still have the temp tags on
) and we just kinda explored around for the time we had. There was a fork near the start of the trail. You could only go one way. My buddy said the closed off trail was where all the 4+ trails were... after that the trails were pretty much randomly picked. That's about all I know unfortunately...
We also saw a bunch of dudes walk right by the "NO SHOOTING" sign with guns

The no shooting sign actually has bullet holes in it....
The shooters are the main reason why they closed the best part of that trail system "carnage canyon"... It was an amazing 8-9 rated trail that was the only hard core option for non-tube buggies on the front range....Anyway the trash left behind by the shooters got the attention of the environmentalists, which had a pretty good point, but somewhere along the line a few bad eggs in our off-roading community winched a few trees to death and carved out the stream bed.
Unfortunately, the Colorado off road community is wildly unorganized and divided, pretty much a useless effort because of the lack of common goals, and we fell below the importance of the much more organized and powerful shooting community. So long story shot, you can still shoot like crazy up there but you can't go anywhere near the carnage canyon area...
However, the off-road community did succeed in creating a new ultra hard core trail on top of "fireman's hill" called the challenge course....i think they're still finishing it up....but its a buggy with 40's sort of trail that is pretty shocking....(although I bet Lo2ay and White Widow would hit it!)
check out colorado4x4.org for info on it.
thx for the pics!

Thanks. The pictures definitely don't do the size nor angles any justice. It looks like I'll be getting some more pictures this Sunday. This go we'll have three vehicles. A friend of mine just finished working on his land rover which pretty much has the works done to it... it's gonna be fun

yeah they closed carnage from that fork at the begining where everyone shoots up to the bottom of fireman hill. but you can still get up to the squeeze. its no to much further up than one of the spots you posted in your pics. I was up there a few weeks ago.
hahaha...oh....yeah that's funny. Its the rocky mountains. As soon as your off the main road 100 yards or so you can open up. Most of colorado is BLM lands. We can drive, ride, hike, camp, shoot etc...pretty much anywhere. Its the people who abuse it that ruins it.
