Im planing a trip to the OBX finally!! I will be going March 15-18. My qst is to those who have been:

1) Which beach is best for camping
2)Which beach is best/favorite for beach driving?

Hatteras definitely for camping and beach driving. Much less crowded.

 

never been down to hattaras, but corolla has about 10 miles of beach to drive on and lounge out. u can drive all the way up to the va border. plus there is wild spanish mustangs that roam the beach up there. very cool!

 

Frisco Woods is a great place. It's on the sound side but still great.

You can even camp at Oregon Inlet on the beach and ride or fish all day just before the bridge.

There are no camp grounds to the north. Corolla, Corova etc.

Anyone know when ferries start running for portsmouth island?

 

From Corolla, NC last spring.

We'll probably be camping Hatteras this year.

 

fiance and i camped for a week down on ocracoke island in 08... just south of hatteras... would do it again in a heartbeat. we went in july on the weekend of the 4th... and the beach was empty and the national park campground had tons of places to pic from... could walk over the dunes and be right on the beach, or wheel on in access spots... it gets my vote!!! *note you do have to take a ferry to get there...*

 

I'll have to check Ocracoke out too. We're probably also going to camp on Cape Lookout National Seashore this year.
