Default Ouray Trip

We spend the 4th of July in Silverton and Ouray every year. We will be up there this year again. We are part of the big parade in Silverton and we watch the AMAZING firework show. If you have never been there during the 4th I would suggest it. To get to my point last year I was there the last weekend in June and got snowed on at the top of the Alpine loop. Poughkeepsie Gulch was good up to the lake up top. It was not passable at that point. I promise I tried. During the 4th we were able to go back and do it. Blackbear was still closed. If you go in late July you will be able to do most of the stuff around there. Usually Blackbear opens the end of July first of August if thats what you are looking for. With all of the snow that we got this year it may be later in the summer before the forest service opens it. If you get a chance go check out buffalo boy. Its just a drive up the mountain on a narrow road but its really sweet. I will let you know what its like after July 4th.

That was kinda what I was worried about - I know most of the region got a lot more snow this year than last year, so there's a good possibility that some of the trails may not open till later. Unfortunately for me, I can't take any time off past July 'coz of kids school and stuff and plus we have other things going on at work. So, here's to hoping for the best that atleast most of the trails are open

Keep us posted on what you see there on the 4th - we'll be there shortly thereafter on the 10th and be in Colorado till the 25th.

Well, a lot of snow in the San Juans this year - but it really melted fast.

All the trails are open - Black Bear opened a couple of days ago and we ran Poughkeepsie today - what a beautiful day! We'll run Black Bear Tuesday when hopefully some of the July 4th crowd will be gone.

We'll be camping near Marble next weekend and will run Lead King Basin and Crystal City at least. We'll be back camping in Ouray the following week.

Have fun - take care!

Awesome! Thanks for that info!! Black Bear is on my list of trails to do - should be there probably around the 13th or so.

The Ouray area is amazing... Poughkipsie Gultch has got to the be coolest run in the area. Some of my other favorites are Yankee Boy - but all the way up past the last pit stop. 2 years ago we came across a herd of mountain goats up there... the wild ones... it was cool. I also like to visit Clear lake, off of the Mineral Creek campground, and I also like to visit the "Wheel House" over near Silverton. Hoping to make it up there myself in August!
