Thumbs up Project-JK Moab EJS 2011 : Day 6 - Goldbar Rim/Golden Spike to the Crack

Earlier in the week, there was some discussion about doing an easy scenic run to finish up our week long Moab adventures but, that didn't last long and, come Friday, it was all about going out with a BANG!! And, that's why we chose to do a run up Goldbar Rim and a part of the Golden Spike Trail to get out to the Golden Crack. On these trails, we saw lots of big ledges, all kinds of slickrock to play on and outstanding views out to the Colorado River and beyond. Here are some pics from our day out.

So, all week long, some joker in our group had been leaving plastic forks in and on our Jeeps and, on Friday morning, I woke up to find this on our doorstep and front lawn - Forked by the Honey Badger...

Making some last minute brakeline modifications on sm_rubi's JK before heading out...

Our street lined up with Jeeps end to end and ready roll...

At the trailhead getting ready to play...

At the trailhead...

At the first big ledge just before Improbable Hill - stopping to let everyone give things a look before taking it on...

Walking over to Improbable Hill to give a good once over as well...

wayoflifette making it up the first ledge with ease...

sm_rubi starting his hop up...

Moochie kicking up some dirt as he makes his way up...

ramin rounding the top...

Followed up by Mituk...

wayoflifette taking a couple conservative stabs at the far side of Improbable Hill...

HONEY BADGER making it up with ease in the middle of the climb...

Trail Bud at the top...

Tom Slik in his 2-door giving the far side three valient attempts...

KenB1010 getting some hang time on his way up...

Heavy on the skinny pedal, Joe from TeraFlex nails the far side in more ways than one...

As you can see here, Joe smashed hard into the hill before rolling up to the top and hard enough to blow out his roller fairlead - honestly, I half expected his airbags to go off...

Not to be outdone, Mel from Off Road Evolution hit this hill so fast and hard that his entire JK got some BIG TIME air...

Moving right along...

Dwitko getting ready to make his drop down Slide Rock...

blazer4949 making his drop...

McPuck86 posing for a pic after touching down...

Mechengineer2 setting up for his drop...

Cruzin along the slickrock and enjoying the scenery...

Turning onto the Golden Spike Trail...

The first step is a big one but, provides plenty of traction and no real challenge for a JK...

Making a stop over at the Goldbar Rim overlook to take in the breathtaking view...

blazer4949 crawling out to the ledge for a better look...

Time to move out...

Stopping to check out the Double Whammy before making our way down it...

Paying homage at the Double Whammy Memorial Shrine...

Of course, coming down is the easy part...

Descending the Golden Stairs...

Circling around the last sandstone plain before arriving at the Golden Crack...

More Pics Below...

wayoflifette leading the way through...

Shot of a local news helicopter fliming our fun at the Golden Crack...

Time for some lunch...

Time to make our way back...

Coming back across, the 2-doors were definitely getting some hang time...

wayoflifette having some fun on the way out with a little spotting from Mel...

Trail Bud following her up...

Blonda taking it on as well...

brainchild pulling up to the top...

Circling around and heading back to the Golden Staircase...

Climbing back up the Golden Staircase....

Having some fun on the slickrock just before the Double Whammy...

wayoflifette getting ready to take on the Double Whammy...

BANG!! Mission control, we have a problem...

If you can believe it, we took out a Dana 60 semi-float axle shaft right at the flange...

Mel stepping in to help stabilize the situation before more damage can be done...

Giving the broken shaft a closer look, it would appear that it already had about a 1/4" crack all the way around and, based on the rust deposits, was most likely failing for some time...

After Mel made a call to Dynatrac to see if they could help, all we could do is sit around and wait. During this time, Moochie was kind enough to share some of his meat stick with those who stayed behind...

Giving a warm welcome to our medic - Jim the owner of Dynatrac came all the way out himself to help out. Man, what a guy!!

The best Jim could find was a display model axle shaft that might or might not have fit. Here you can see Mel doing a test fit...

The shaft turned out to be just a tad too long but, we could make it work and so, we started to wrap things up...

Making a small offering to the Double Whammy Memorial Shine...

Slowly backing off the Double Whammy...

On the move once again...

Trying to follow the trail in the dark was tough and, thanks to all the traffic jams we encountered along the way out, our long evening was made that much longer...

Just in case, we pulled out some winch line at Slide Rock but, wayoflifette was able to nail it with ease and without any assistance...

For the most part, it was smooth sailing from there. A super BIG THANKS needs to go out to Mel from Off Road Evolution and Jim at Dynatrac for going above and beyond the call of duty to help us out and, to our good friends that stayed behind to keep us company. You all rock!!

Got to thank you again for taking the time to do this when we were prepare to miss this run so we didn't slow anyone down if we broke.

Damn never thought I'd see a D60 shaft look like that! Wish we had camera's on everyones faces when we heard the explosion because I know mine looked something like this we were a couple of jeeps back waiting to do double whammy thinking did we just see Cindy's first break.

I can believe it. I did this to a Semi-Float rear also. Upgraded to Dynatrac Full-Float rear. No more problems.

Who would have thought that the last JK run would truly end in a "bang". Bummer Otherwise looks like you had a great run. Mtnbiker and I ran Goldbar rim just before the Greenday run with the forum. Slide Rock was interesting down and up. Glad every one all made it back Ok.
