Video - Stand CLEAR: or get taken out !
Ok, school me again...it seems odd...
The strap didn't give, the bumper gave....are you saying that the metal can't take the yank or that the strap can't take the yank? It seems a busted strap isn't going to cause any damage so long as there is no one in line with it.....not arguing, honestly trying to learn.

This looks like a bad or improperly installed bumper, or just the fact that strap was used and abused to the point where something had to give. The bumper seems to have been the weak link in this case.
Bumpers should be mounted to the frame rails via grade 6 or 8 bolts and most bumpers will require at least 4 bolts per side, some even more.
Some things to keep in mind when installing your bumper. If your bumper requires a 7/16" bolt don't use a 5/16" bolt just because the holes don't line up. I see this alot more than you would think.
Grade 8 bolts are best but if you need to you can use a grade 6 bolt. Don't ever use a grade 4 commonly called a "butter bolt" for a bumper install. Also, always try to get a full nut worth of threads on your install.
I can tell you that we carry "kinetic ropes" on our trucks. When recovering we leave a 5-10 loop in the middle of the two trucks and then pull. I'm not talking about jeeps. I'm talking about military vehicles and recover gear.
The ropes are only used for that pull then trashed. All the same safety rules apply and these ropes will take the beating.

1) The people did not make sure that the area was WELL clear.
2) The owner of the Jeep did not maitain his vehicle properly and probably had a bunch of rusty bolts holding his bumper on.
3) The owner of the Jeep did not anchor to the correct point. He should have hooked to the chassis, not the bumper.
Sure, we can all agree that there are tools for different jobs, and the correct tools. A kinetic rope is designed exactly for this reason. However, sometimes, you won't have a certain tool required for the job, and need to make due with what you have, which in some cases, would be a tow strap used for yanking.
Just my .02
I gotta give it up to that bumper though. that guy was giving it hell and it broke off before it bent! the guy though...man thats common sense. ive had hooks come off and shatter back glass. you learn I guess. the hard way...
