Who wants to drive the TAT in 2017?
I'm just going to throw this out there now for planning purposes, I'm getting out of the Marine Corps in February of 2017, and I've always wanted to drive the Trans-American Trail since I heard about it on my last deployment. It was mapped by a guy on a dual sport, so some of it is impassable by Jeeps, but there are bypasses for those sections. The TAT is composed mostly of dirt roads, gravel roads, Jeep roads, forest roads and farm roads. It also goes through some of the big trails in Colorado and Utah (Black Bear Pass, Imogene, Moab) so I wouldn't be starting until probably mid June 2017. There are also different legs to take. the original TAT starts on an island in North Carolina and ends on the beach in Oregon. There are also two newer legs that start in NYC, goes down to the original trail in Tennessee, and follows that into Moab, where it splits and goes through Arizona and ends in Los Angeles. I'm planning on going to school either in Arizona or Texas, and my family lives in Ohio now, so I'm leaning towards starting in NYC and ending in LA. I'm posting this here to see if anyone has any interest in going. I have all the maps and GPS coordinates on my computer from one of the websites. (the GPSkevin one has them for free)
This is from one of the various websites for the TAT.
"This motorcycle adventure across America on the Trans-America Trail is NOT a single-track tight woods ride. It is a route using dirt roads, gravel roads, jeep roads, forest roads and farm roads. Dropping down into dried-up creek beds. Riding atop abandoned railroad grades. There are sections of mud, sand, snow and rocks… it’s all of the above, but it’s for the Dual-Sport Rider."
