Default advice on wheels/tires

I'm not the most savvy when it comes to the specs of jeeps and tires. Im thinking about buying a set of wheels/tires size: 295/75/17 (33.9 inch to be exact) Nitto Terra Grapplers. I have a stock wrangler sahara unlimited, currently with tires 255/70R18- seller says the new size will fit my stock jeep but another owner told me I would be safer getting a lift to accommodate. Not really wanting to purchase a lift at this time due to finance - any suggestions/advice on the tires and size? Will the ride quality be much different?

Yes, you would be safer with a small BB or trimming the fenders, and either rims with less backspace or wheel adapters. (price them out just so you have the info while you decide. Both are fairly inexpensive options). If you don't want to chance any rubbing, stay with a stock tire size. If you are ok with the trimming the flares, or adding a washer to the steer stops, or adding bumpstop, or adding a small BB or body lift, or new rims or wheel adapters, or whatever, (IF needed), then go for it.

One thing you need to remember with tires is that there are a bunch of variables involved, so just because it worked (or didn't work) for someone else, does not mean that it will or won't for you.

Just for a sizing comparison, my 295/75/16 Terra Grapplers measured out to 32" sitting under my 4door. Decent tire, but I should have just gone with 35's and a more aggressive tread.

thanks for the help. Might have to look for smaller wheels as just not ready for lift etc right now.

If you want 34" tires try this, I put on 305 70 17 BFG km2's with American Outlaw Marshal wheels with 5.70" backspacing and no rub full lock. Tires stick out only about 1/2" beyond fenders. No lift other than 3/4" spacers up front that cost only $150 installed and took them like 30 minutes to install. Though I went from the horrific 3.21 gears to 4.56, perfect setup.
