It's livable as long as you understand jeeps are not sports cars. West Coast Sea level with rolling hills up to 500 feet on freeways and 2,500' when I hit a trail head. Drive with OD off. It does bog down when I go over the Sierra Nevada and I'm fully loaded for camping trips. On the freeway with OD off, I usually turn 2,700~3,000 rpm keeping pace with traffic between 65 to 70 ish. Those RPMs are the sweet spot on the 3.8. Average 13 mpg, can get more the slower you go.

well. I was thinking about doing the 295/70/18 which measures out to 34.3x11.6/18. Do you think that would be a bit better?

It really depends on your expectations; driving style. Remember to add more space for increased braking distance with bigger tires. So if you drive fast, keeps lots of space to stop.

I will. Do you think I'll still be able to keep up with traffic?

When your over 70 mph and rpms are over 3,000 with OD off, turn OD ON and rpms drop. Continue to accelerate with OD off now that the engine is in its power-band. (2,500~3,000 rpm) If your caster is dialed in you should be stable. How safe is up to your skills and environment. Stopping is now something you should really consider. Leave more room to brake.

Basically just a gear ratio that allows high sustained speed with lower rpm. Turn OD on / off by pressing that small button by the base of the shift lever. A message will appear on the dash "OD OFF" when button pressed. Press button again, dash message goes away and OD is on.
