I left a gap because I wanted the 3/4 to be supported by the frame of the jeep without it pushing against the top. It also worked out so that with the back window out I can open that area without it making contact with the top. I did not design this to lock it's only to keep wandering eyes from seeing into the trunk. If you wanted it to lock it I'm sure you can change it up to work for you.
And as for the softball comment. I used to say the same thing until I started playing softball now I have a different view about the game.
