Default Programming Instructions

Just wanted to add the instructions from my 2010 manual page 16:

Customer Key Programming

If you have two valid Sentry Keys, you can program new Sentry Keys to the system by performing the following procedure:

1. Cut the additional Sentry Key Transponder blank(s) to match the ignition switch lock cylinder key code.

2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position for at least three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds. Then, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the first key.

3. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position within 15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound. In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will begin to flash. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the second key.

4. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will sound. In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will stop flashing. To indicate that programming is complete, the Vehicle Security Light will turn on again for three seconds and then turn off.

The new Sentry Key is programmed. The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter will also be programmed during this procedure.

Repeat this procedure to program up to eight keys. If you do not have a programmed Sentry Key, contact your authorized dealer for details.

NOTE: If a programmed key is lost, see your authorized dealer to have all remaining keys erased from the system’s memory. This will prevent the lost key from starting your vehicle. The remaining keys must then be reprogrammed. All vehicle keys must be taken to an authorized dealer at the time of service to be reprogrammed.

Did it today, took a couple of tries to get the timing right.

Thank you ... excellent write up
Just did mine, ordered two keys online and free cut from ACE hardware ... all work great.
Followed the instructions to the letter and no issues.
Thanks again.

And these instructions from page 17 & 18 of the 2011 Wrangler Owner's Manual

Customer Key Programming

If you have two valid Sentry Keys, you can program
new Sentry Keys to the system by performing the
following procedure:

1. Cut the additional Sentry Key Transponder blank(s)
to match the ignition switch lock cylinder key code.

2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn
the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position for at least
three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds. Then, turn
the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the
first key.

3. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position within
15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound. In
addition, the Vehicle Security Light will begin to flash.
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and
remove the second key.

4. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition switch.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position within
60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will sound.
In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will stop flashing.
To indicate that programming is complete, the Vehicle
Security Light will turn on again for three seconds and
then turn off.

The new Sentry Key is programmed. The Remote
Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter will also be programmed
during this procedure.

Repeat this procedure to program up to eight keys. If you
do not have a programmed Sentry Key, contact your
authorized dealer for details.
There are LOTS of places to find JK Wrangler Transponder Chip Keys on the internet for about $25 or less. Dealer prices are usually over $100 per key. You will need to take the new key to your local hardware store or locksmith to have it cut to match your key code. Some do this for free, some charge only a couple of dollars to cut a blank key.

Just Google:

Nice write up. I will do this if I lose one of my keys. Not a fan of the big key might make a smaller one thanks.

Default Unless you have two keys, you can't program a third with the Jeep.

If you lose one before you've made a third, the only thing to do is buy from the dealership. . . .

Great write-up.

I did this for my Jeep. 2 blank transponder keys cost me under $41.00 delivered and it cost me about $4.00 to have them cut at a locksmith. Turned out the locksmith I went to cuts keys for the local dealership sometimes. . . . according to him the basic transponder key is $120.00 from the dealership. Doing the math, I saved about $195.00

If you loose one of your keys, and have only one key left, you CANNOT make a duplicate.

You must have two working transponder keys to make/program additional keys.

The dealership lost one of hte originals and made a new one for me and mailed it to me I thanked them for mailing it last time I was at the dealership and the service writer went in the back and came back with another key for that works on my jeep. A couple weeks later I was snooping around under the carpet in the back and I found the lost original. So now I have a total of 4 keys to my jeep.

Just did this. Cheap way to save you from a big headache. Also have a spare key in my wallet. Saw another thread where the guy chopped off the head part of the key so it's nice and small.
