GPS mount project
You can get a u-connect module for some of the non-mygig stereos. It plugs in the back, which is where the dock connector cable is going.
What Daystar doesn't tell you is that when you put your cell phone, GPS or anything with a battery on the tray, it WILL affect your compass! I bought the Daystar unit specifically to keep my phone on, but the compass went balistic. Driving straight down the road, it told me I was traveling in circles. The compass pickup is mounted directly to the underside of this panel. The only thing the panel is good for is to hold your sunglasses.
My JK is automatic, so I stuck one of those self-adhesive suction discs in the semicircular void just forward of the shift lever. When I need GPS, I just stick the suction mount on the disc and it stays there until I remove it. I had to file about 1/16 inch off one side of the disc to make it fit, but it's in there.

Fortunately, the GPS's these days tell you which direction you're going and I will probably just unplug it or take it out all together.
I actually ordered the u-connect for my 07 JKU. It was like $250 or $270 and am just waiting for the stealership to call me back and let me know its there. The parts guy was actually pretty cool and said it was pretty simple to install. I'll be ordering the Misch panel probably next week and I'll post pictures and hopefully have a write-up on the u-connect module.
So after finally getting the part from overseas, the dealership informed me that I would have had to spend another $200-300 to get this thing installed, do some reconfiguration with the computer and I had to buy another separate cable for the ipod that wasn't included with the myGig unit. I finally told them to shove it and refund my money. I can deal with the factory unit until I have the funds to replace it with a Nav unit. The Misch panel works great though. It's a great spot for my gps, phone and sunglasses when I need them accessible.
You don't need the ipod cable. I just run a small 8 inch mini jack to mini jack cable from the AUX in the HU to the headphone OUT on my iPhone 4. The iPod should work the exact same way.
I'm pretty sure he means having the gps stolen. Here in NYC, thieves will target cars with gps mounts. They even look for the circular smudges that the mounts make on the windshield. Damn thieves! I don't even keep change in my cupholders anymore.

it looks like they have a regular (non-mygig) head unit... Can the regular HUs interact with an ipod using a regular ipod cable?
