I finally got around to doing both of the Jeeps today, although I did the mod a little differently. I used the plastic mesh gutter guard, but behind that I backed it up with some 1/4 inch mesh painted flat black. There will be no rubbing of the metal on the plastic grill and there is the added strength should a rock make its way to the grill openings.

I did my ladies first, perfected how it would all go together before I did mine!!!

I'm trying to decide which color to make the insert, silver or black. I have a silver JK, anyone have picks of this mod on a silver JK with the grill painted silver or black?

I cut a piece of expanded aluminum metal 15" x 28". Primed and painted satin black and then notched out around the retaining clips for the grill, I used self adhesive zip tie blocks and trimmed them to fit between the grill slots. I used 3 on each slot of the grill and 3 on each end, all of them evenly spaced and used black zip ties to secure the grill insert in place.
All the materials came to around $25 or less.

Default Grill Mod

Hey Guys, I just did mine over the weekend.
It came out great. I got some gutter guards from Lowes, painted them black and cut them to fit behind each opening. Total cost was like 10 bucks including the zip ties.
Thank you guys for the great ideas and the write up on how to do everything.

Here are some pic's
