Hard Top Hoist
Had the day off soooo I decided to tackle a hard top hoist. basically I stole the basic idea from HG07JKRubi's write up only I went with wood.
Here is what I used.
(1) 10' 2x4
Hard wood scrap aprox 2'x1'
(1) U Bolt 5" tall by 2.5" wide
(5) Lag eye bolts
(3) Pulleys
(1) Lag bike hook
(material to build "shelf" for hand winch)
lag bolts of various size
(1) Hand winch.
(1) ratchet style strap.
First I located the studs in the wall a fabricated a shelf for the winch and secured it with lag bots. make sure you pre-drill otherwise you will split the wood.
Next I installed the pulleys using eye bolts.
I then built up the "T" using a 10' 2x4 cut to 68" and 44" secured them together using 3" wood screws. I had a scrap of hard wood left over from some other project which I used for the bracing material. Again secured with 3" wood screws.
I installed eye bolts at the door ends and the bike hook at the rear. I needed to trim off approx. 1 inch of the bike hook so that it would fit in the sill between the window and the hard top. I used a dremel with a cut-off wheel to do this.
For padding I used shop towels and duct tape. (you can build a space ship with duct tape and cable ties BTW)
Hook it all up and position the U bolt where the hard top balances. mine came out to be 22" from the end of the "T". I had to put some screws on both sides of the U bolt to keep it from moving.

WOW! That's cheap! My setup cost me $180, but uses some extruded aluminum framing in lieu of the lumber. I've thought of posting shots of mine, just never taken the time to take pics.
I have some friends who want to build hoists and cost is always a consideration. A hoist for $100 is pretty cheap though. Nice job again!
