became soaked and full of mud and started to rest on the engine.
I guess I will have to wait until it gets hot enough to melt the metal clips, too.

I had my headers coated before installation with a black satin thermal barrier coat. I did it for performance reasons such as keeping exhaust velocity with a side benefit of reducing under hood heat. Never came close to any overheating issues before or after installation, but I would guess that there is a 20-30 degree drop in under the hood temperatures in the summer. The headers run cool enough from the outside that you can't feel heat emitting from them after a half hour freeway drive immediately after turning the engine off. Cermakrome or Jet Hot coatings do pretty much the same thing, albeit with a lower ceiling temperature.
