Default Hypertech Review, Install, Write-Up

WHEN YOU FIRST RECEIVE YOUR HYPERTECH

Install the CD that comes with the Hypertech programmer.

Connect your laptop or computer to the hypertech. Run the "check for updates to tuner update application" under the help menu. This will update your software on your computer first. This is an important step. Dont skip it. Your software window will read 1.1.6.2 or newer. Otherwise you will get continuous errors.

Connect your Hypertech tuner and click the Update Tuner button. (Before updating tuner make sure the computer is connected to the Internet and that the tuner is connected to the computer via its USB interface.)

The software then will notify you if your updated or that you will need to enter your email when the update is available.

click "get tuner status information".

Updated GOOD

Not Supported BAD (contact Hypertech) this happened to me and I waited 9 days for the update. Your programmer will be useless during this time.

IN THE JEEP

Plugging it in.

You will not need to pull any fuses or turn anything off. The update took care of those issues.

Reading Computer 65 percent. Takes 20 minutes

When the Hypertech unit is done reading the Jeeps computer it will show "no bus" on the dash.

At this time it will tell you if your vehicle is in the update or not. If it tells you that its not updated then you will need to contact Hypertech and have them add your engine. More and more are getting supported so dont be frustrated. Be patient.

If it works you will be notified to enter your settings for FUEL TYPE, TIRE HEIGHT, GEAR RATIO, COOLING FAN TEMP. Once entered your Hypertech unit will start copying the files. Please wait copying files.

Writing part 1 69 percent Takes 10 minutes Part 2 takes 10 seconds.

MY REACTIONS AND THOUGHTS

First off the best thing this did right away was get rid of the hesitation when starting off in first gear. My wife drove it first and she could really tell it had something it was missing before.

My first setting was 32" tires 4.10 gears regular fuel and stock settings for the cooling fan.
The hesitation was gone and the engine revved with the slightest touch of my foot to the go pedal. There was a nice little nudge that wasnt there in the lower RPM's. The speedo for the BFG Mud Terrains was off before the program and this made it a mph worse.

My second setting was 31.5" tires Stock gears (4.10, this time I left it stock, there was no point in updating that part), Premium fuel, and stock for the cooling fan.
The hesitation was gone STILL but the engine ran a little rough with 87 octane and the premium setting. I was on 1/8th of a tank so I went and filled it up with premium (92 octane here), I instantly felt more power after I got on it. The mid range band is nice because I keep my RPM's low to save on fuel economy. I havent really opened it up yet but there is definately more punch. If feels a lot more drivable and the 6th gear has got more accelerating power. I LOVE it. Premium is the way to go if you can affor the additonal 20 cents per gallon. Roughly 4 dollars more per fill up! Now the speedo was still off but only by 1 mph which is very acceptable but I wanted to be perfect.

The third program was the same from the last except I went with 31.25 inch tires to get the speedo dead on. The tires measured at 31.5 inches but I think due to tire pressures and the weight flattening the tire under the axle it made it more accurate to use the 31.25".

I am very happy with everything that the programmer has provided including the 11 hp and 24 ft-lbs with no additional mods!

stock - regular fuel - 170HP @ 5150RPM w/ 197 ft-lbs torque @ 4150RPM
Hyper- regular fuel - 177HP @ 5000RPM w/ 204 ft-lbs torque @ 4250RPM ==> + 8HP @ 4850RPM & +15 ft-lbs @ 1500RPM
Hyper- premie fuel - 179HP @ 5150RPM w/ 209 ft-lbs torque @ 4000RPM ==> +11HP @ 4300RPM & +24 ft-lbs @ 1800RPM

Nope

Intakes are noisy and exhaust systems are too. I like the quietness of the stock equiptment for hunting, trail riding and all that jazz. For no additional add ons 25 extra ft lbs is nice! I use premium fuel though.

I will comment back on mpg when I get more info gathered.

If you want to know the exact tire diameter just mark your sidewall and the ground with chalk then drive one full tire rotation and mark the ground again. Take that distance and divide it by 3.14

for example a distance of 109.25" / 3.14 = 34.79" diameter tire.

Nice write up. Thanks.
I may have to update my Hypertech Speedometer Calibrator to the Power Tuner.

I've got my Hypertech Max Energy and I'm happy with it. Even though I felt it was expensive, after biting the bullet I wouldn't go without it. I had no problems at all installing it and definately felt the difference right away. Plus my speedometer works right again and the computer knows when to shift! It made overdrive work better on the interstate thats for sure!

I noticed that it shows you the last connected VIN. Does it only work on one JK? If my wife decides that she wants a JK could I use it on both?

Nope, they do that on purpose so people don't buy it and resell it, thus cutting into their sales...
