Is the replacement PVC best purchased from the dealer, or does NAPA or Advance Auto or some place like that carry it?

Last time I checked, the after market didn't have the correct PCV valve. They have one that looks like it, but the orifice and spring tension are different.

The dealer wants about $10 for a JK PCV valve.

Wow, that's not as big a robbery as I thought it would be!

Thanks!

Not bad, until you see the one that looks just like it, for $3.

I bought mine at NAPA ... they listed it for the JK so hopefully it's the correct one! It wasn't much cheaper though.

Can you post the NAPA part number?

My '08 Owner's Manual says first inspection of the PCV valve is 60K miles, and every 30K miles thereafter. Other year Owner's Manuals have different intervals.

Inspection involves removing it, looking for damage/blockage, and shaking it to see if the "bullet" inside is free ans still spring loaded.

Cleaning it is not recommended.

i assume i need to do this since i pulled the tube off and oil came out in little drips. it would explain the oil film in my intake.

A tip of the hat to ronjenx for a clear and easily repeatable writeup.

Mine started with the lightning bolt error recently. My 08 was not throwing any codes. I went to my local jeep dealer and got a new PCV valve for $11 and did the swap.

Seems to have done the trick.

Mine had a few drops of oil on it, don't know if that is a symptom of a bad valve or not.

In any case, the whole swap took about 10 minutes, very easy to do. I used the tie wrap trick and it came right out. The oil on the valve might have helped

Thanks ronjenx

So this is a follow up, its Sep 4 and replacing the PCV has totally cured the problem. I have run a couple of tanks of gas through it and zero issues. There were two things that might be helpful if you are having this problem. My jeep threw no codes at all. And the lightning bolt would come on in two modes, when throttle off from around 45 mph or so gliding down to a stop or a turn, point is long off throttle period. The other mode was while just idling, if I pulled up to a stop light and it idled more than a minute, the lightning bolt would come on. I was at 28K miles.

Very good write-up. The German in me makes me wish you had wiped clean the valve cover first, tho.
