Default Shift knob replacement for your Auto!

After asking around and not seeing a lot of options I called Gennie Shifter and ordered their Lo-Dapt II Shift knob adapter. I was told that it would be all I needed to replace my side button shift knob with any other knob I wanted.

I bought a cheapo Auto-Zone knob just to try it out and I'm not happy with it totally (it's too big and uses set screws for attachment) but the adapter is simple and easy to install. I'll order a shift knob, probably from Gennie Shifter to attach to it later.

Here's my first attempt at a lame video on how easy it was to install, notice how poorly the knob attaches, this isn't the fault of the adapter, only of the cheap knob.

I've since replaced the crappy knob with a cooler flash hider I had in the parts bin. But you get the idea.

Not bad. Seems us auto guys get shafted on the cool after market stuff, nice to see something like that.

Here's a couple shots of the new and improved shift knob.

I should note that the threads on the adapter are Metric 16-1.5 (fine thread). Not a standard size and most shift knobs are not going to fit this size. Also, set screw mounted knobs will require some adaptation to fit (that's why the cheap Autozone one went on so poorly).

Dude, this is fantastic, thanks for the post. I'll definitely be picking up the adapter and possibly one of the Orbit knobs. I wonder if they would do a custom manufacture of Mr. Smiley over there <--

I like this idea!

I would want to change the angle of the rod so it does not interfere with the cup holder... Thats a real PITA when you are wheeling, And need to pull it down into 1st, And you have a damned drink cup preventing it from going in!

maybe a shorter handle?

If you have only seen the video, then yes, the original shift knob was much too long. A shorter device was definetly on the list. I have since pulled the cheap autozone shift knob off and replaced it with a smaller flash hider from a .30cal I had in the parts box. Check out the photos a couple posts up. I'll check for clearance in first gear, I don't think I've put it in first since the switch.

I don't think you'll be able to change the angle of the adapter without significant engineering efforts.

If there is a tall cup (a can is GTG) in the forward cup holder there is some contact in 1st gear. Not enough to prevent putting it in 1st but enough to move the bottle or cup back a bit. Overall I'm happy with the mod. I just wanted to show people that there is a way for us automatic owners to get a new shift knob!
