So I swapped out my shifter boot for a leather one as the title states! I took pics and figured id do a write up incase anyone else wanted to get one.

First I popped off my shifter knob, I took a wrench wrapped in a cloth and a metal bar... (Could not find my hammer) and I tapped it till it popped off, (5 good taps)

Then I popped the shifter the shifter bezel off by hand.

Then bring it in to your work area.

Pry apart the boot from the plastic. Get a cold drink... Mine was Ginger ale!

You have to drill (5/32) the fake screws out to make room for your real hardware. I chose black Allen head screws to make it look factory. Don't forget to drill the second piece ( the bottom half)

Put your new screws in, then put your leather boot on, slide the bottom piece on and add your nut and tighten them up... Not too tight! I used blue lock tight so they don't come loose and get sloppy.

I took my sweet time, my helper got bored and took a nap.

Your pretty much done, now bring it to your jeep! Pop the front ( closest to the radio) in first, then tap the rear in.

Now wrap the shifter know in your towel, wrap it good and thick ( I did not wrap it well) Now I'm in need of a stock shifter knob.... Does anyone have one? Cheap?

Tap it on, bam your done. Enjoy

Oh man... :sad2: You should just push it on next time. There is no need to use anything to pull it off. Also what hardware did you use to bolt the trim pieces together? I like the finish on them!

rinkishJK 07-28-2011 01:16 PM

The hardware size I used was 8-32x1/2"

you need 8, I got them at true value. I got black (they were extra) .50 Cents each!

They were extra because black is hardened steel... Overkill for sure but silver would have looked out of place.

IcyFridge 07-29-2011 11:41 AM

You can also just get an after market knob. Run some electrical tape around the top of the shaft and shoehorn that thing on. That's what I did with the pool ball shifter in my Dad's JKU.

Harve10 07-29-2011 06:03 PM

Looks very nice, definetly going to try this.

Harve10 07-29-2011 06:04 PM

Should thank you in advance for taking your time to walk us through the steps and post some pics. Once again, well done.

glocksrfun 07-29-2011 06:16 PM

You worked your helper way to hard, she looks exhausted. Looks great!

rubiconjk09 07-29-2011 07:56 PM

Great Mod .... and this is the way it should have came from the factory. Order my leather boot today ... thanks again.

NH-JK 08-01-2011 09:49 PM

Thanks for the compliments, all PM's have been returned. Good luck everyone.

NH-JK 09-01-2011 09:18 AM

Just to update everyone who asked, the boot has worked well. I wish I got it a little taller maybe 1.5-2 inches... There is an option to get a taller one. It's not a huge deal, I'll live!

Thank you for hooking me up with a new shifter knob! BEERS!

A lot of people keep asking how it shifts and if it binds up like the rubber boot. It shifts great, really smooth with no resistance or pushing back/ popping out like the rubber boot did (especially when it was cold) the hardware has been great to, no loosening or rattling and looks much better. All in all I'm very happy and would do this again.

Any of you guys who have done this mod feel free to post up your pics. If you have any ideas or info to add, go nuts!

Good luck.

Fixed mine today

I didn't do a swap for a leather boot, I just needed to fix the bezel. All those stupid plastic fasteners broke off and the rubber boot was flopping everywhere. I couldn't find the black screws so mine are just silver. I may paint them black may keep them how they are I kinda like the look of it. It took me about 30 minutes to complete and cost $0.98. I got the bag of screws and nut all in one at Home Depot. I used the #8-32 1/2" just like you said. Here are my pics of the work. Thanks for the great write up. This saved me a lot of money.

superjk10 09-01-2011 06:17 PM

maybe this could stop the dam shifter to pop in neutral when its could out.. I think that plastic is way to hard but alot easier to clean! great job!

artiedib 09-05-2011 11:00 AM

Great job and nice write up. Thank you.

Union Jack 11-12-2011 03:48 PM

Thank you!

That's what I love about this forum; seek and you will find! My boot started flopping around yesterday and when I pulled on it, the rest of the plastic posts broke so now I need to fix it. Hitting Home Depot tomorrow on the way home from church.

bpeters 11-12-2011 05:34 PM

That looks damn good! Just might have to do this myself.

NH-JK 11-25-2011 10:07 AM

Go for it, let me know if you need any help or have any questions.

Excellent! This is the only method that worked for me to get the shift nob off! And it wasn't near as brutal as the other method that includes slamming it against your forehead!

Shifter boot.

Hey guys, I'm out of the jeep game for bit. I had to sell the jk to buy my house. I miss it everyday. I'm driving an older tacoma for now... Don't hate! I'll be back in a JKU someday!

You can get the leather boots at redlinegoods.com
I think they're about 40 bucks, if you post pics on a forum they give you a small rebate.
Good luck guys!

NH-JK

Now know on another forum as::beer: NHTacoma

lowendrider 02-12-2013 05:07 PM

Put one on about six months ago myself..had problems in cold weather with the rubber boot causing it to jump out of 2nd gear. I love the leather, it has worked out great.

JeepDude90 02-12-2013 08:54 PM

hmm just had an idea. paint the heads of the screws to match the paint of the jeep. wonder how it would look....

icrashbikes 02-13-2013 04:56 AM

I did this on a 2012. The difference is epic.
