I don't know where you live in Anchor town but I lived up there for 2 years before moving down here. Depending where you drive the streets can be solid ice for months. Sure they keep the highways in pretty good shape, but get off of them and many MANY of the side roads are bad. It's the same down here on the Kenai, where I've spent the last 25 years. Even some of the downtown roads are solid ice for months. It all depends on what kind of winter we get and how well they keep up on the roads.

Fair enough, when I think of ice on roads I'm thinking the really nasty slick stuff. Breakup is the worst time for that. There's generally always packed snow and ice on the road but it's not that dangerous unless you're going to fast or following too close.

When I was in high school (go Bartlett!!!) I had maybe three studs in each tire on my '69 Chevelle and got around just fine. And that's back when I was young and stupid, going to fast and following to close.
