Mt Redoubt
WOW...........talk about out of the fryin' pan, into the fire.....lol
Well, I've heard it gets pleanty cold in WY. I bet you're really starting to like Healy now tho.....with the days getting longer and longer...the ol' snowball effect I call it. In fact, I think you guys have probably passed us up now....meaning you guys will start passing us up and get a lot more daylight than us if you haven't already. It's amazing how a few hundred miles makes such a difference.
I'm sure you've done your research, and I'm sure you have a pretty good idea of how the summers are, but all I can say is....Prepare to be BLOWN AWAY....!!! There is NOTHING like summers in Alaska. Especially where you are. You will find yourself wanting to go do things at 11 o'clock at night...!!! Fishing can be/is fantastic. I've heard of places up north with fantastic fishing. I imagine you will fish the Yukon. Years ago my friend hunted off the Yukon and got into some BIG Sheefish(sp). He said they were a crazy game fish. Of course, you've probably heard about the fishing down here. So it may be a trip you want to make if you have the chance. Can't hardly beat the halibut fishing anywhere else.
I'm actually surprised that Healy has 1000 people. That's about 800 more than I expected. ...lol. I can bet you want to get to Fairbanks to get a little civilized for a few days......winters can get long eh?...lol. My boy is going to college in Fairbanks. He came down for the weekend and just got outta bed. He will be headed back tonight. I also have a couple friends in Fairbanks, but have never been up there to visit.
Good luck on settling in.....I'm sure when your family gets there you'll all have a blast.
Yes, Redoubt blew again this morn. But it looks like the ash just skirted off the side of us...........but it's still early. This can go on for months...
Have you been checking out the AK volcano observatory website? http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/Redoubt.php
Feel free to pm me anytime or ask about any questions you may have. BTW....are you a hunter?

It is definately cold up here, but I am not to bothered by that. In WY it will get down in the low -20s and then it will blow 30MPH. the wind is so bad. the nice thing is down there you get one or two speels a year where it stays below zero and the rest of the winter it is in the teens and twentys.
We (the wife and I) spent two weeks up here last summer. Healy is as far north as we made it. We did have a blast though. We fished along the Denali hwy and caught some Greyling. We also went fishing off shore in Seward. My Wife loves fishing and is a great cook. I love smoked salmon.
Thanks for the Yukon idea (had to look at a map) looks like a great weekend idea. head straight up the steese hwy.
I (we) do hunt. Elk and Antelope in WY. I grew up on deer and phesant in Neb. and we are looking forward to what AK has to offer. I even hope to take the kids out small game hunting. I promised my oldest girl when she turned 7 that she could go rabbit hunting in WY. Well with the move we forgot and this fall she will be 8. The older kids have been shooting a little chipmonk .22 since they were 4. My goal was safety, I hope they picked up a little while having some fun.
What about 4 wheeling? I don't believe in tearing up the land, but was hoping I could find some good trails to take both jeeps on. The Scrambler is sitting on 40" IROKs and was built for the rocks in Colo. It looks like there are some trails close in here. Are there organized trail outings down there? I found a club that did some stuff out of Anchorage but it looked like they were mostly into mudding. Not my style, I think they give our sport a bad name. Don't get me wrong, if I hap across a mud hole on the trail I will buzz through it, but I tried a few different clubs out in Colo when I lived there and got with a couple groups that were out to absolutly destroy everything. I would like to find a group that likes a challenging trail but won't say too many "adult" words around the kids.
