Default Texas law regarding "wide" tires & coverage ?

What is it ?

Do you really need fender flares ? If yes ....how much of the tire can actually stick out from the flare ?

I have searched several different ways and came up with nothing. You do need mud flaps if you have 4 wheels on a rear axle (Dually). I'll do some more checking but it looks like nothing here in Texas.
I am clearly outside the fenders and have had no problems with the law here in Central Texas. If I have been off-road I make it a point to check my lugs for rocks or dirt before I go out on the main road at speed. Just good practice for my friends on the road. I may get the wider flares but have been on the fence because I am concerned about damaging them on trails. I also think that 35's would look better than my current 33 setup. The stock flares have worked pretty well so far.

Cant help specifically with Texas...out here in CA they've said for years you're only allowed to be out a MAX of 2" pas the flares.... aint ever heard of no-one being given a ticket though unless it was actually much further out. I've never seen it in print but then again I aint been looking & the CA codes are about as big & crazy as the federal tax laws

Best bet is to just simply call your Highway patrol and politely ask to speak to one of thier officers that 'really knows the laws' although whomever you get might be blowing hot air or real info you should be able to get an idea at least on how the cops in that area percieve the law to be.

Texas dont have thier total combined civil/criminal/traffic laws on-line? Find the roll up package of allllllllllllllllllllll Texas laws and search within the texts....about the only other mentioning I can come up with.

Only thing I can see loosely applying would be:
(And that would only be if some judge considered your tires/rims as part of a "load".)

§ 621.201. MAXIMUM WIDTH. (a) The total width of a
vehicle operated on a public highway other than a vehicle to which
Subsection (b) applies, including a load on the vehicle but
excluding any safety device determined by the United States
Department of Transportation or the Texas Department of Public
Safety to be necessary for the safe and efficient operation of motor
vehicles of that type, may not be greater than 102 inches.
(b) The total width of a passenger vehicle and its load may
not be greater than eight feet. This subsection does not apply to a
motor bus or trolley bus operated exclusively in the territory of a
municipality, in suburbs contiguous to the municipality, or in the
county in which the municipality is located.
(c) A passenger vehicle may not carry a load extending more
than three inches beyond[0] the left side line of its fenders[0] or more
than six inches beyond[0] the right side line of its fenders[0].

Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.
