A hand held CB is ok...but, installing a CB can be easy and cheap. Most of us have CBs installed and communicate this way.

As Jeff said, a handheld CB is just fine but most of us run installed CBs. You'll get better range and quality with a better CB. The handheld units are better than nothing though. Installing a CB is one of the most simple things you'll do to your Jeep, and I'm sure just about any of us could help you if you need help.

thanks for the info guys. it doesn't look too complicated and i've seen the write-ups and what others have done. just wondered if there was new technology out there that enabled people to communicate on the trails without having to install something in the jeep.

one thing i'm still unclear on - are there hand helds available without installation of any kind? seems like when some people refer to hand helds they are talking about a cb with all the controls on the hand mic and a box hidden elsewhere. i was looking for a solution that is totally unwired. does this exist and is this what you guys are referring to when you say hand held? i'm going to go with the installed cb option, but won't have it by this friday and was wondering if there was a quick temporary fix.

anyway, looking forward to friday to whoever is going. i'll be at hogan's at 9:00. if something changes my cell phone is 918-645-2600.

Sure there are true handhelds out there. Amazon sells them, but you can probably find one at a local hock shop or garage sale as well.

I have the Midland 75-322, and it is a handheld that converts to a vehicle mount. All you have to do is plug it into a cigarette lighter outlet and then plug the external antenna in and you are in business. I use a magnetic antenna base and I can remove the CB in seconds and secure it in the Tuffy console.

I just bought the cheapie at Wally World and wired a 12V lighter plug on it. Then I use a magnet-mount antenna and get 'er done. I'm contemplating one of the better ones, though... I find that to be a common theme in the Jeep!
