I push the ESP switch and do not have this problem. Or I go to 4WD-Low. If I don't take those actions then, yes, the engine throttles back when the tires start to slip.

Are you certain that your ESP kill switch is working correctly? I've not followed the subject because I have no interest in it since using the Jeep-engineered functions have worked fine for my purposes. But, I do recall years ago folks complained that they carefully followed the kill switch mod procedure, double and triple-checked their work, and the mod did not work. Maybe there's an incorrect version out there and you have it.

I think what is happening to you is the brake activated traction control system is kicking in and bogging you down. I forget what jeep calls the system but I don't think that is turned off by disabling the ESP. Maybe if you do the total disable but not sure. CM

ESP light on the dash is always on. Which means the system is off. It's on when I start my Jeep, 2wd, 4wd hi, and 4wd lo. You can tell when the ESP acts up and starts grabbing on the brakes and really killing your throttle input and that never happens anymore. So it HAS to be completely disabled.

Perhaps this it what's happening. It's the Brake Lock Differential (BLD) feature (though Jeep calls it something else). Think of it as a software version of Limited Slip Differential (LSD, which Jeep also calls something else). I have LSD, so the way it works with the BLD when the ESP is turned off (don't you just love dirty talk?) is probably a bit more efficient.

Well then the question is, how do I fix it? Is it as simple as pulling a fuse or what?

When the esp light is on it is telling you the stability program is disabled either from you pressing the button or a malfunction in the system. By pressing the esp button once it turns it off so that if the vehicle begins to slide sideways the jeep won't able the brakes to attempt to straighten itself out. If you dont press and hold the esp button till it dings and reads ESP OFF on the display then your traction control is not disabled and it will throttle down to try and maintain traction. The BLD works wonders it is independent of the esp and tlc systems. If it senses one tire spinning faster than the other it applies the brakes to the faster one and makes the other one spin. It wont affect engine speed.

No its not the brakes... its your throttle that backs off. You ESP controls both throttle and brake.

If he has disabled the ESP its not the throttle. When i first took mine in mud I was always stalling it because i tried to keep the rpm low and a light foot on the throttle to prevent spinning and digging. I have to keep the JK rpm up and just gun it through mud. I do have a 6 speed. The BLD will definitely bog you down if you are not watching for it. CM

Pulling the fuse will disable all traction control as well as ABS. It is either fuse J6 or J7 I always forget. When you open the fuse box it's not the one in the front row of fuses, it's the other one. One of them gives you a check engine light when you pull it. The other one just gives you the ABS and ESP lights. You're looking for the one that does the later. Your other option wold be to do the disable switch which also does the same thing from in the cab. Then you just need to restart the Jeep to re-enable everything. The instructions are at the bottom of this page.
