Since you are up north a ways, I assume you deal with snow and ice on a semi-regular basis, so a lunchbox would not be your best choice. (lunchboxes are inexpensive, $250-$350ish, but there are some handling issues on the slick stuff).

The best option would be a selectable, which you turn on and off with the press of a button. (these are very expensive, $850ish plus any compressors/switches/etc, so may be out of your budget).

That leaves the TruTrac. It is arguably the best limited slip on the market. Full case, works great on ice/snow, and much less than a selectable. The downside is that with wheels-in-the-air offroading, a true locker will perform better. (a little brake pressure will lock the tires up and get you through most obstacles, but a locker would be better for this). Last I checked, a D30 TruTrac was around $390.

With a Trutrac wouldn't he need a install kit and installer? That's $300 more.

You're thinking about gears. The install for a trutrac is the same as for a detroit or arb or elocker or factory rubicon locker. (with the exception of no air or cable or electric lines or switches) More than likely, yes, he would want it professionally installed, as it is full case and not a lunchbox, but an install/overhaul kit is not needed as you aren't re-doing the gears. (lunchboxes are installed 'inside' the stock carrier, and many people are installing them in their driveways...)
