Default 2016 engine in a 2012

I’ve acquired a 2016 3.6 I was looking at swapping it into my failed 2012 engine. One of the main differences i see is the vvt solenoids in the top of the heads and some egr stuff.
has anyone done a newer gen 3.6 swap? Could I use a ‘16 engine ecm?

Welcome to JKF.. Interesting question. The '12 is a 3.6L so. IMO probably can but you would have to use a 2016 ECM & all sensors so that it conveniences the engine that it is in a '16.. not sure if trans bell housing and all bolts up.. What emissions inspections do you have -- this I see as a major issue if it is like Pa.

You unable to rebuild what you have? I know it is hard to find a decent machine shop now as engines seem to be more throw away now and buy a crate one new. Personally I would stick with the 2012 format.
