Default 2nd Red Top Optima Battery EXPLODED!!!

Thats right!! There must be a bad batch out here. When I took it in today down to the shop, they said that it's the 4th one in the last 3 weeks. So I had them exchange it for a Yellow Top and hopefully there won't be any problems here on out.

So for any of you that just bought a new Red Top Optima Battery, and start noticing an odd/sweet/nasty smell that gives you an unbelievable headache; open your hood CAREFULLY and look to see CAREFULLY if the battery is leaking acid.

Hopefully nobody else has these problems. So far there is at LEAST $2500 in damage according to the estimate the dealership gave me.

We had to send both batteries to Optima for their engineers to "look into it." They said it could take up to 6 weeks before I even hear anything back. Sucks because my poor Rubi's paint is just bubbley all over the passanger side.

because you are overcharging and cooking batteries thats why

when Optimas or other gel based batteries are overcharged the gel separates from the plates in a hydrogen bubble and then BOOM (or pop).

I thing your regulator is screwed, bring to dealer.

I don't think thats the problem because 3 other Red Tops have exploded in 3 totally differant jeeps out here. The other 3 are not JK's.

It would be good to have it checked anyways. If it is the alt. then its the dealers problem and you may have a fix sooner than 6 weeks.

Yea, you both have a good point! I need to take it into them anyways cause my rear locker light is blinking from the last trip. I figured it may because of the battery, but it's still doing it after this new one has been put in. Only problem is, I won't be able to for at least another week or two.

Thanks for the replys guys!

Everyone told you not to run the Warn Powerplant off a Optima Red Top in your other thread when you blew up your first battery. So you went and did it again? Maybe you need to start thinking about a dual battery setup with an isolator instead of blaming Optima. Having your alternator checked is also a good idea.
