X2, this is the way to remove it! The front has rubber snap-in's and the back has two pivots. It's as easy to remove as your girlfriends bra! As for why it's there, because there was a study put out years ago that showed people prefer a simpler looking engine compartment over a complicated one and that the more complicated it appears the more it is assumed to be costly to repair and/or to have more problems. So the car manufacturers found a simple way of making it appear simple by just covering most of the engine to make those simple folk feel more at ease.
