3.8L Engine Build
Alot of quick change oil places use cheap or recycled oils which break down fast - Engines tend to chew it up and ultimately wear the rotating assembly out faster.
We've used 10/30 castrol GTX in all our JK's from day one and we notice much less consumption and the integrity of the oil is more consistent.

I changed the oil when I first bought my jeep (slightly used) and put in Mobil1 5w/20. When I first started noticing the oil consumption I topped off and added some Lucas oil stabilizer. The stabilizer is thick stuff too which helps with the cold starts. Next time I change I'll step up to the5w30.
Anyway I work with a guys who is a SAE mechanic that previously worked for a Stealership. He Is very knowledgable and helped more than a few people with issues we work with. He recommended me a performance shop that his friend works at. He said they would be willing to look at my motor and give me recommendations on correcting the oil consumption. I'll see if maybe if they could maybe upgrade some of the bearings while in there. Plus if they are good in price I can finally get to order and put on a Ripp S/C.

I am thinking about getting an extra 3.8L from a wreckers to work on for fun,... maybe see how big a piston i can cram in, stroke it out, put in a decent cam, port and polish.,
the way these things seem to be dying it may not be a bad idea to have an extra one ready to rock and roll 100% better than the original.
I have never seen any performace engine parts for a 3.8L V6..
do they exist? who sells these parts?

Umm never - we test at higher levels for control -
That was a mouth full, let us know what they come up with... RIPP is a speed shop and we worked on mostly small displacement engines - The Honda's and Toyota's we built didn't use oil even with zero weight. When we started working with Mitsu's thats when we noticed oil consumption - So we stepped up the weight and finally went to regular oil... Three years ago with Jeeps, same thing. We tried Amsoil, Redline and Mobil, we found oil consumption over 3000 miles. We switched to GTX 10/30 and the oil consumption was nearly gone...

Are you saying that standard oil is preferred over the Synthetic's?
I switched to Castrol's Synthetic's in the anemic 3.8 figuring it would not breakdown because of the increase operating heat. I always used synthetic in the race cars, close tolerance , high heat, etc
The real question is why are these engines using oil? Is it cylinder washdown into the combustion chamber? Are these engines really tight tolerance? or the opposite.

Gas is way way to expensive in Canada. 1.25 per Liter and going up. I also cant afford all the parts needed up upgrade to a V8.. it will cost me close to 15000 to 20000 to do this.. way way out of my price range. I also dont have an enclosed shop to work in.. its simply impossible without more money. rebuilding a strong 3.8L is the cheeper option
Interesting alternative. I have an 08 with about 4K miles on it used mainly off road. I live in CA and wondered about any chance of a CARB exemption to run it?
A tad off topic but...
For people with unexplained oil loss Chrysler techs are recommending you use "5W30" motor oil... Apparently it's solved many peoples oil loss and has been approved for use in our engines without voiding warranty. Check with your dealer and I'm sure they will pass you the same info.
