Factory recommendation is 5W-20. You're saying 5W-30 is thinner than 5W-20?

Are you saying that standard oil is preferred over the Synthetic's?
I switched to Castrol's Synthetic's in the anemic 3.8 figuring it would not breakdown because of the increase operating heat. I always used synthetic in the race cars, close tolerance , high heat, etc

The real question is why are these engines using oil? Is it cylinder washdown into the combustion chamber? Are these engines really tight tolerance? or the opposite.
We think the 5/30 is just to thin - because there is no consumption with the marginally thicker oil... Some engines are sloppier than others and it just seeps through the "cracks" - plus your always stepping on the gas revving it out to get you over every little hill... We noticed with the blower there wasn't any more consumption - However these engines do run sloppy on the crank-case side so it could just be sucking it up through the vents rather than consuming it We are actually testing with catch cans right now to prove our point - more on that later this year.

No - we didn't but we suspect its not the oil - per-say - We think its just a bit sloppier thats all... Our 60k engine has not lost compression and neither has our 30k, so we feel their running soundly using 1/2 quart per oil change.

So as you can see the theory of relatively is clearly spelled out above with 6.1 being the denominator.
