35s on an 18x9 wheel with a 5in backspace
Hey Folks,
THis seems to come up every now and again. It seems to be law that when going with an 18x9 wheel that the backspace should be 4.5 and no more than 4.75. I saw a few posters in other threads defy this wisdom without having any rubbing issues. I purchased 18x9's with a 5in BS and can report that there is NO RUBBING. I think however that when you go with a wheel that has these specs, you now have to start considering the actual width of the tire and not rely soley on the tire size stamped on the side walls.
I have duratracs 325/65/18 where the actual width is almost 13 inches. If you went with a tire where the tire width is actually wider than 13, you may start to have rubbing.
The only concern I have is the trucks potential to roll over. Its logical to assume that a lower back space will cause your wheels to stick out past the fenders more, thus offering a lifted jeep with less roll potential since its stance is wider. Just a thought.

HEre are some pics to back up the fact that an 18x9 wheel with a 5in Backspace will work.

Even with a 4 inch lift, I cant beleive how close the tire is to rubbing the stock bumper.

*****Disclaimer*****
While you can use 18x9 wheels with a 5in Backspace, more than likely, the wheel will not allow you to use the stock tire carrier. Mine hits the top of the back bumper. THis is why using a 4.5 - 4.75 backspace is probably good advice to follow. a quarter of an in less in BS and I probably would have been able to mount the wheel on the tire carrier.
